Saving CeeCee Honeycutt
Saving CeeCee Honeycutt: A Novel | Beth Hoffman
Read Beth Hoffman's blogs and other content on the Penguin Community.Steel Magnolias meets The Help in this Southern debut novel sparkling with humor, heart, and feminine wisdom Twelve-year-old CeeCee Honeycutt is in trouble. For years, she has been the caretaker of her psychotic mother, Camille-the tiara-toting, lipstick-smeared laughingstock of an entire town-a woman trapped in her long-ago moment of glory as the 1951 Vidalia Onion Queen. But when Camille is hit by a truck and killed, CeeCee is left to fend for herself. To the rescue comes her previously unknown great-aunt, Tootie Caldwell. In her vintage Packard convertible, Tootie whisks CeeCee away to Savannah's perfumed world of prosperity and Southern eccentricity, a world that seems to be run entirely by women. From the exotic Miz Thelma Rae Goodpepper, who bathes in her backyard bathtub and uses garden slugs as her secret weapons, to Tootie's all-knowing housekeeper, Oletta Jones, to Violene Hobbs, who entertains a local police officer in her canary-yellow peignoir, the women of Gaston Street keep CeeCee entertained and enthralled for an entire summer. Laugh-out-loud funny and deeply touching, Beth Hoffman's sparkling debut is, as Kristin Hannah says, "packed full of Southern charm, strong women, wacky humor, and good old-fashioned heart." It is a novel that explores the indomitable strengths of female friendship and gives us the story of a young girl who loses one mother and finds many others.Watch a Video

Another low pick for me. It was a sweet, quick read with lots of interesting characters.

What a sweet, wonderful story. CeeCee‘s life in her first 12 years hasn‘t been a very good one. When tragedy strikes and she goes to Savannah to be with her Great Aunt Tootie. CeeCee is introduced to a world unlike any she has known and surrounded by women who teach her about true love, learning to live with loss and finding yourself. An unforgettable cast of characters and a touching read. You will fall in love with these women. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 ❤️📚

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It‘s filled with southern charm and humor . At times I almost cried about Ceecee‘s early life. Other times I laughed out loud.

1. I do not have a favorite, but I just made this: https://fatfreevegan.com/blog/2010/03/03/bryannas-vegan-pumpkin-pie/

2. Thankful for getting to go on a walk with in town family today and for the activists and lawmakers who maintain socialist unemployment programs so the unemployed during this pandemic have something to live on right now.

I don‘t usually review books I bail on, but I read over half of this before I had to stop or puke. I stopped. This is not Southern fiction. This is some midwestern caricature of Southern fiction. If you want quirky characters you can believe in, read Eudora Welty. There are plenty of well-written books set in the South. Don‘t waste your time on this one.

If you love southern fiction, this one is for you!

CeeCee is only 12 years old when she is sent to live with her aunt in Savannah in 1967. She spends the summer getting to know her quirky neighbors, while also battling some truths of her own.

I‘ll be honest, I dislike southern fic, so this one wasn‘t my favorite, but a lot of my friends on GR gave it five stars. #honeyhoney #abbainaugust

Kalalalatja I have to ask, as someone who hasn‘t really read Southern fic, why don‘t you like it? 6y

Starting this one that was given to me by @Reviewsbylola
Funny story - the beginning of this book features a Mom that is a former Vidalia Queen in Georgia. I went to college with a Vidalia Queen (and several Watermelon Queens that were my sorority sisters). I love me some crazy Southern characters, and since this will be set near where I live, I‘m sure I will enjoy!! 👸

Kaye I really love Southern fiction. It‘d be great if you had any recommendations that I have yet to try. I do t like romance or mysteries, more books like Pat Conroy‘s style of writing. Family drama? Not sure how you‘d describe them. 7y

This was such a warm hearted read. I loved the characters. At times I feared the ending would disappoint me, but I was pleasantly surprised. While the story starts off a bit sad, it was wonderful to see the growth of CeeCee through her journey. This story really highlights mental illness and the affects it can have on families when help is not given. If you are looking for a light and fun read, I would highly recommend this book.

This book was such a great and easy read that was uplifting and so sweet while also having moments of intense tragedy. I love the characters specifically and the fact that the book is so centered around love and forming relationships. Beth Hoffman does an amazing job of describing feelings that I thought couldn't be described and has an amazing ability to write about the human heart and condition. 10/10 would recommend this book.
