The Haunting of Hill House
The Haunting of Hill House | Shirley Jackson
The classic supernatural thriller by an author who helped define the genre First published in 1959, Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror. It is the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a "haunting"; Theodora, his lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powersand soon it will choose one of them to make its own.For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust theseries to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-datetranslations by award-winning translators. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Ugh I hate to say it but I didn‘t love this book as much as I was hoping I would. Maybe it was too much hype or maybe my expectations were just too high. It wasn‘t bad but I also didn‘t find it very memorable. The ending felt rushed and I never felt like I bonded with the characters. I adored We Have Always Lived in the Castle and was thinking I would love this one as well.

Jee_HookedOnBookz Awww so sorry you didn't enjoy this! I loved 'Castle' too, probably just a little bit more than 'Haunting' :) 2w
Kimberlone I just finished this and really didn‘t care for it. I didn‘t like Castle either but I wanted to give Jackson another shot before I gave up on her because she is a very beloved author by many. I had a hard time finding anything to connect with in her characters. I guess she‘s just not for me 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w
dragondrool I loved We Have Always Lived in the Castle. But I also have the same opinion of Hill House. You aren't alone. 2w

I finished this book earlier this month to get into the Halloween spirit and I feel like I picked a good one. I‘ve seen The Haunting when it came out and have been wanting to read it ever since. The Haunting was pretty dead on to the book and it took another turn about halfway through but I can understand why. The book ending probably wouldn‘t translate well to film but I thought it was a great finish to the book. In true Shirley Jackson fashion.

Spillmrj Love the author and the book 1d

Sooo I'm still on the fence about how I feel about this book. It def didnt scare me but I had a hard time focusing on it too. I did like the end of it which I think is what helped me to give it a thumbs up. I finished the show last week and I'm still having nightmares of that. I'd like to hear people's thoughts on the book for sure.

mdm139 I loved this book. I actually screamed at one point. 3w
Chrissyreadit I thought it was a good story and liked it but it was unusual for me to like a book with so many dislikable characters. 3w
PSreads73 I just purchased the book and the show on blu ray. I will be reading the book first. There have also been 2 movies made about the book. The movies are both titled The Haunting. One I think is from the 60”s the other is 1999. The movies aren‘t rated very high though. 3w
Callemarie @PSreads73 the show is LOOOOOOOSELY based on the book. I say that because you could watch the show and nothing would be spoiled in the book. The show was great I thought 3w

😐 I dunno. These people were vapid and their conversations were often nonsensical. The ending was good, though holy moly why would you let her do that, but I was expecting more terror and more build up. As was, felt a bit sprung on me, but maybe that was just me? Does a haunted house count for the theme?

#teamstoker #scarathlon +4pts

Lcsmcat The one on Netflix is very different from the book. There‘s a 1963 version that sticks more closely. It gives the psychological effect rather than monsters-jumping-out-of-the-walls effect. 1mo

I read this because it is considered a classic horror book and it is mentioned as a favorite of characters in many books I love. I kept waiting for that moment that everything falls apart and it gets wickedly scary, but it never came. It is hailed as, “a perfect work of unnerving terror” but seems to be more about mental illness and declining sanity.

I'm beginning to realise that this is exactly the kind of book I love/crave. Pitch-perfect existential horror. A masterpiece, really. The utter terror of the unknown in every human psyche. That, combined with who knows what exactly is *out there*. I was riveted from start to finish & knew I was in the hands of a master. Family, individuality, guilt, love, burdens. Her writing itself feels haunted, layered with meaning. #spinsterlit #femalegothic

batsy I just learned on twitter that it was published 60 years ago today. Happy birthday to this brilliant mindfuck of a book. 1mo
Billypar After 'We Have Always Lived in the Castle' I'm ready for more Jackson - this sounds excellent. And speaking of existential horror - I'm in the middle of Oyeyemi's 'White is for Witching' and loving it. Scarier to me in many ways than straight horror. 1mo

batsy @andrew61 Thank you! I loved We Have Always Lived in the Castle as well, if you haven't read that. And I'm looking forward to reading more of her work. You're right about her life being interesting—the Ruth Franklin bio seems good! 1mo
batsy @Centique No, that's the first time I'm hearing it! That's a cool word! I'm going to use it 😆 It's more psychological terror than anything but Jackson is a writer who keeps things weird and strange at all times. There are moments of respite, I think, that makes it all the more compelling/sad/scary. 1mo
batsy @saresmoore Thank you, Sara! 1mo
LeahBergen @Centique Sook is a word I only hear from east coast Canadians, mostly Newfoundlanders. I love it! 😄 1mo

batsy @Centique @LeahBergen That's perfect! I'm tickled because it's a Malaysian slang thing to end sentences with a "la" for emphasis ? 1mo

I see now why this is considered a classic horror novel. The subtleness in the shift of the characters mental state made it much more frightening. Is it real? Are they possessed or just having a bad day? Was that all in their head or did it really happen? It‘s so well done! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
