We can all be heroes. Thats the inspiring message of this lively, collectible picture book biography series from New York Times bestselling author Brad Meltzer. Kids always search for heroes, so we might as well have a say in it, Brad Meltzer realized, and so he envisioned this friendly, fun approach to biography for his own kids, and for yours. Each book tells the story of one of Americas icons in an entertaining, conversational way that works well for the youngest nonfiction readers, those who arent quite ready for the Who Was series. Each book focuses on a particular character trait that made that role model heroic. For example, Amelia Earhart refused to accept no for an answer; she dared to do what no one had ever done before, and became the first woman to fly a plane all the way across the Atlantic Ocean. This book follows her from childhood to her first flying lessons and onward to her multi-record-breaking career as a pilot. This engaging series is the perfect way to bring American history to life for young children, and to inspire them to strive and dream.

While this serves as a good introduction to Earhart, that‘s just it…an introduction. I guess when told in the first person, little Amelia will not go into the details of her final flight (she‘s little the entire book, even when portraying an adult). I do like the positive words, and it is an easy book to read aloud. Overall, for really young kids, probably a good starting point to Earhart‘s story. #BBRC #PictureBook #LetterI

Girls should wear dress and not have unladylike adventures! Thank goodness Amelia disagreed as a child and loved to explore. This love ends up taking her on the greatest adventure of her life. Read “I am Amelia Earhart” the B of Amelia and find out how Amelia persevered as a woman in a man‘s world. New York Times bestselling author Brad Meltzer book fits perfect with URL 7.1 to optimize individual choice and autonomy.

Mazzole18 This AS can be incorporated with ESOL strategy 26 by maintaining a library of supplementary books and workbooks written in simple English, which offer additional illustrations for problems. The beautiful illustrations are done by Chris Eliopoulos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8XiFfthUiQ has a wonderful read aloud to go with the book. (edited) 4y
Mazzole18 You could also pair this lesson using Piktochart for an author study or a study of Amelia's life. Research for this lesson can be found at
https://www.ducksters.com/biography/women_leaders/amelia_earhart.php and piktochart.com is the link to create a Piktochart.

DrSpalding Two excellent resources! Nice work Nick. These picture book biographies are visually appealing and provide factual information about historical figures that our students need to know about. English learner strategy 28 refers to providing biographies to students. Your English learner strategy also works well. Sidenote, the author writes adult political thrillers. I have read the majority of them and they are really good reads! (edited) 4y

I Am Amelia Earhart By Brad Meltzer and Illustrated By Christopher Eliopoulos. This B book is a great IR for students to learn about Amelia Earhart and how she made history. This story is about a girl who became the first to ever fly alone over the Atlantic Ocean and so much more! This book has important information about her life in a cute and fun way!

Viviannef This book is a part of a series called “Ordinary People Change the World”, which are great books for students to learn about other historical figures. 4y
Viviannef UDL principle 6.4 Enhance capacity for monitoring progress and ESOL strategy 42 Have students use timelines to arrange and sequence important facts and information. By arranging a timeline students will be able to monitor their progress as they read of the events that took place.

CameoD This is such a cute and inspiring book it looks like! Would love to have this on my bookshelf in the future :) It is marvelous to teach students at a young age about historical figures! 4y
DrSpalding I am a big fan of this author. I have read most of his adult political thrillers as well. Children are quite engaged by the images in these books. The use of timelines is something you will have to expose students to and teach them how to use to enhance comprehension in almost every grade level in your social studies standards. 4y

What an inspiring woman she was! This B picture book written by Brad Meltzer and illustrated by Christopher Eliopoulos is about the legendary first female pilot.. Amelia Earhart! However, that‘s not all she‘s accomplished in her life.. you‘ll have to read and find out! This would be a great book to use in an AS for your class since this book has its own series. #ucflae3414su20

bsiqueira https://www.kidscreativechaos.com/2015/12/amelia-earhart-lesson-activities-book.... This is a great resource website in which includes lessons that incorporate her life in many different subjects. I personally read this book for a social studies history lesson and it was a wonderful lesson to use a timeline for in order to describe her life events! (edited) 4y
bsiqueira The UDL strategy that would go good with both an author study and creating a timeline to describe Amelias life events is 4.2 “Optomize access to tools and assistive technologies.” Followed with ESOL strategy #42 “Have students use timelines to arrange and sequence important facts and information.” 4y
AshleyH Children love to learn about Amelia Earhart so I think they would really like this book! I love how the resource you provided gives idea or incorporating this book in other subjects other than reading. 4y
DrSpalding This series is visually appealing! English learner strategy 28 is all about providing biographies! I have read this authors adult novels as well. They are political thrillers and very very interesting! As you noted, these books can work nicely in social studies lessons. 4y

I am Amelia Earhart by Brad Meltzer is a Biography perfect for IR. It is all about Amelia and her life. The pictures are awesome too! ESOL strategy 9 is about using t-lists and time lines to organize information. This would be easily practiced with a factual text, like I am Amelia Earhart. UDL strategy 6.4 allows students to track their progress. Using this text and timelines they would easily be able to track their progress through the book.

KaitlynN https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/I-Am-Amelia-Earhart-Text-Dependent-Q... this is a link to TPT. This book seems popular on that site. This small packet has many text related questions and an area where questions are based on specific dates. I liked that because it connects thee timeline with the review. If they took good notes the questions are simple! #ucflae3414sp18 6y
AshleyC Lovely book to include in your classroom library! Great for learning about people who have made a difference in our world and who have accomplished their dreams. 6y

This series is a great way to introduce biographical book to children because it gives important factual information in a fun narrative and with comic book style illustrations keeping students engaged. KayleeC http://www.smartspaceniu.com/just-plane-awesome-learning-what-makes-planes-fly/ Reading a book about Amelia Earhart would not be complete without flying your own airplane. In this activity students will create a paper airplane and fly with the class. This activity supports UDL 8.3, foster collaboration and community. It also supports ESOL 46, use discovery learning activities (hands-on-activities). 6y
MeghanW I absolutely love this series! It is a kid friendly way for younger kids to know important people in history! I love the idea of having the kids make their own airplanes! 6y

This B book is part of an awesome series called Ordinary People Change the World. It tells an important biographical story, but the images and comic book style make it fun for kids. This can hit ELA, SS, and STEM standards all in one! I love the idea of reading this during an aviation stem unit. Author Brad Meltzer and Illustrator Chris Eliopoulos work together to create books in a series called "Ordinary People Change the World". This book is one of them, and it follows the story of Amelia Earhart through fun, pleasing illustrations. I think the inspiration behind this book and series is great, and can be found here: http://bradmeltzer.com/TV-Kids-and-More/I-Am-Abraham-Lincoln/Q-A. This would be great for an author study! #ucflae3414sp17

AlexandriaJ I love these books! I choose one for my Litsy log and adored the pictures and how they portray each character they are to write about! 7y
DrSpalding You are right! He would be an excellent author study to complement a unit in social studies regarding historical figures. 7y
CaraM I would love to use this for a history lesson. The illustrations alone seem like they would be great for young students! 7y

I only just heard about the #iam books last night when scrolling through #litsy . I immediately put some in my reserve cart at the library. I can't wait to share these with my God children and nephew! Who am I kidding, I'm buying a set for myself as well.

The drawings are so cute and I love how this one encourages children to be themselves, even if it isn't quite what is expected of them. Highly recommend it!

britt_brooke These look so cute! 7y

DeborahSmall @britt_brooke I really love Rosa Parks, Jane Goodall, George Washington and Martin Luther King. They all look great. My 7 yr old loves talking about American presidents, you should hear her opinions on Trump and Clinton, I have the news on too much! We haven't talked about Abe Lincoln yet so that will be a good way to introduce her! Her reading is more advanced than the books but she is still learning from them 😊 7y
britt_brooke @bookdrunkard78 @DeborahSmall I need to pick up some of these. Such a wonderful concept! 7y
