I enjoyed this a lot, and learned and laughed a lot. Win! The chapters on social media were less interesting to me, but overall an enthusiastic pick.

I started to rate this So-So but then decided that for a novella, it's good. There's not a whole lot of characterization going on, but the plot is there. Interesting as a precursor of/inspiration for Stoker's Dracula.

SUPERFUN! There was no way I could wait for the next issue; I had to keep reading. Fantastic creepy Victorian gothic mystery/ghost/horror story: Venice! Mysterious widows! A rake with an interest in chemistry! To tell more would be a disservice.

Loved it, but I'm no Austen purist and I like seeing the decisions a writer makes in retelling a story. I thought this really worked and was tons of fun to read besides. Recommended for people unburdened by literary sacred cows. 😜

I enjoyed reacquainting myself with Harriet so much. I remembered how much I envied Harriet's city life as a kid living in small, suburban towns. And I appreciate Fitzhugh's flawed and so human characters all the more as an adult.

It's two days until the RNC begins here in my hometown of Cleveland. I'm becoming increasingly anxious about it, so re-reading a childhood favorite sounds like a good plan.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Good luck! I was just watching a story on the news today about the preparation and thinking if I lived there I'd be planning a stay at home staycation for the next week to avoid the craziness! 8y

I was surprised to read so many negative reviews on GR, especially of the "people only say this is good because they think they ought to" variety. I loved this book, but I am interested in Buddhism and find it very appealing. Maybe that helps. I found it beautiful. Another win for Serial Reader!

A nice read while I was spending a day traveling. Some of the events covered in the book are inaccessible to anyone other than fiber industry bigwigs (TNNA for example), so it's fun to read about them.

affiknitty @RealLifeReading To really enjoy it, I think it helps to be the kind of knitter that reads a lot about knitting, is on Ravelry, listens to podcasts, etc. She does a fair amount of name dropping. 8y

Ok, not REALLY about this book. Why is "women's fiction" a genre? When are we going to recognize that books about women are books about HUMANS and therefore of potential interest to ALL readers? Rant over.

SusanInTiburon Preach! ⭐️ 8y
Shortstack I was just talking about this the other day! I think women understand men more than the opposite because we spend all this time reading about white men, but they consider just about everything written by a woman as "chick lit" and avoid it. 8y
affiknitty @Susanintiburon @shortstack I also just noticed that the book atop the Literary Fiction pile is titled THE PRESENCE OF MEN. 🤔🙄 8y
See All 6 Comments
affiknitty @Shortstack Absolutely! Some men think women are so "mysterious"... maybe it's because they've never read anything that had women characters with interior lives. 8y
Shortstack @affiknitty had a guy roll his eyes at me for reading a Margaret Atwood book at the bar saying it was pure chicklit. Ended up in a conversation with him a few others later and he said he couldn't believe how intelligent I was for a girl. The correlation of this mindset was not lost on me. Ugh. 😁 8y
BookishFeminist ???? Seriously, this drives me nuts. Women's fiction ISN'T a genre, it's a sexist marketing tool publishing companies use to push books they think women would like. Maybe men would read them more & it wouldn't be so biased if they'd lump it all together already. Another peeve: "urban fiction" ? 8y
