An easy read that encourages a life lived to the fullest at the limited time it is granted to have. Facing your limited self can be freeing.

Juxtapose of reality and ideals, this book explores the life inside each characters, always balancing between living with what is expected and living with what is uncertain.

It turned out to be a good read when examined under the lens of race, power, and consequences. There's so much love too, but it wasn't what had me turning the page.

DrexEdit Glad to hear you ended up liking it! 😀 3y
arkei @DrexEdit I'm thankful for the replies when I was considering bailing on it! I wasn't really curious about what led to that event—the whys of it are a bit predictable—but reading the replies made me interested in exploring other themes. Do you have some recommendations of books with similar themes but with different conflicts or a different approach? 3y
DrexEdit The one book that occurs to me is Americanah by Chimamanada Ngozi Adichie. That might be one to try if you haven't read it yet. (edited) 3y

All her life, she had learned that passion, like fire, was a dangerous thing. It so easily went out of control. It scaled walls and jumped over trenches. Sparks leapt like fleas and spread as rapidly; a breeze could carry embers for miles.

- Chapter 11

quote
arkei

Everything, she noticed, seemed capable of transmogrification. Even the two boulders in the backyard sometimes turned to silver in the early morning sunlight. In the books she read, every stream might be a river god, every tree a dryad in disguise, every old woman a powerful fairy, every pebble an enchanted soul. Anything had the potential to transform, and this, to her, seemed the true meaning of art.

Jealous of Mia's passion for photography... I've only had such attitude towards books—nothing I regret—and writing, but I wish I was drawn towards other creative pursuits at that early age.

The use of “they“ is sometimes throwing me off that I have to reread the paragraph again, but so far, the writing is familiar even though it is my first Yoon Ha Lee book.

“Well, I‘d love to buy one,” Mrs. Richardson said. “In fact, I insist. If we don‘t support our artists, how can they create great work?”
“That‘s very generous of you.” Mia‘s eyes slid toward the window briefly, and Mrs. Richardson felt a twinge of irritation at this lukewarm response to her philanthropy.

arkei 😬 the haves vs have-nots, in a system where art is merely another opportunity to show how charitable you are 3y

Work! When her mother said it, it reeked of drudgery: waiting tables, washing dishes, cleaning floors. But for the Richardsons, it seemed noble: they did important things.

arkei This bothers me a lot. It seems to be a contradiction of an understanding presented earlier in the book that Mia's Work is her photography. Or should I take it as a sign that Pearl is changing? 3y

Going to stick to using #Litsy on a mobile browser instead of its android app. Although it's nice to be able to upload images easily in the app, it sucks that featured posts & some muted hashtags still show up on the app feed. 😒

An evaluation on and of essays—form, purpose, and impact—that is enriching as that last beautiful poem one had a short encounter but remembers forever. Dillon also writes of his struggles and how reading and writing are ways to cope even when, at times, both are at the roots of the struggles.

Worth a reread for when one wanders.

Stacks of books were piled high all over the house – not just arranged in neat rows on bookshelves, the way other people kept them, oh no! The books in Mo and Meggie‘s house were stacked under tables, on chairs, in the corners of the rooms. There were books in the kitchen and books in the lavatory. Books on the TV set and in the wardrobe, small piles of books, tall piles of books, books thick and thin, books old and new.

A lovely collection. Considering the collection title symbolically—a man falling from a place of untouchable height and dominating visibility, there's this tension that rises up in every story as it focuses on women, their status and their relationship with what surrounds them. I love how each story began and how each took me to an evocative end.

- “On melancholy“

arkei I'm struck by this phrase, especially that last bite: “decay of ambition“. It isn't death—a pointed end, but “decay“. Does this mean an inevitable sad ending or a chance to recover? Waste can be used as added material for a more fruitful work, right? 3y

Protestations of debilitating sloth are common among writers, and more frequent among prolific ones; Boswell and Johnson, for example, had many sympathetic chats about their shared reluctance to get out of bed and down to work.

arkei Well, “debilitating sloth“ is not limited to writers & any “protestations“ to work is, of course, common to workers. Productivity, ugh 😑 3y

To bail or not? 😖🙈

DrexEdit I liked it. I don‘t know how far into,it you are tho. 3y
arkei @DrexEdit Oh! I'm only three chapters in. How far am I from a dramatic confrontation/drama, if you remember any highlights? Also, what aspects of the story did you like? 3y
LibrarianRyan I bailed on the show. Does that count? 3y
See All 11 Comments
DrexEdit @arkei It was kind of a slow burn story that kept ratcheting up tension. I liked the multiple storylines and how they all fit together. It was also a great story about families (which I like) and how they function, or not, and the damage that can be done even when you believe you're doing the best thing for all involved. It also touches on mother/daughter themes and race/identity/assimilation. Not a lot of action, but a lot about relationships. 3y
marleed I read this considerably prior to the limited series. If not for sn IRL bookclub, I wouldn‘t think about this… I was aware of the future casting while reading and noted Kerry Washington as Mia. Ohh, thought everyone else. Had they considered race/culture for Mia (and they didn‘t) they collectively thought Asian. I believe our whole bc discussion would be different if we were to read/discuss today. 3y
arkei @DrexEdit That makes sense. I expected some drama outright. Maybe because of how it started. Thank you! 3y
arkei @LibrarianRyan Not really... 😆 Adaptations are tricky. 3y
arkei @marleed Better different? 3y
arkei Thanks for your thoughts! ♥♥ For now, I'll continue reading this. I think I know how to approach this book now. 3y
marleed @arkei I think not better or worse really just different. The way my bc read it at the time lead to great discussion but it was not a discussion centered on BLM, rather more team Elenor or team Mia. But reading the book following the series and the events of 2019-2020, I think we would have gone in an BLM discussion. Both good discussions. 3y
arkei Oh, taking sides. So there really is a good scene somewhere in here. Thanks for your reply and talking about the book club experience, @marleed and sorry for my late response. 3y

Pushed to say what I value, what I love, in essays and essayists, I sometimes think it is nothing but style.
[...]
What exactly do I mean, even, by ‘style‘? [...] As much in a person, in a body, as in prose: those people who can keep it together. ‘I like your style‘ means: I admire, dear human, what you have clawed back from sickness and pain and madness. I‘m a fan, too much a fan, of your rising above.

What is “work“?
Me: something you are hired to do
Book:
• You may or may not be getting paid for it, but this is the stuff you “do.”
• When using the term “work,” we mean the broadest definition—not just what you do to make money or for “a job.” Work is often the largest single component of most people‘s waking lives, and over a lifetime it occupies more of our attention and energy than anything else we do.

On race & privilege, on parenting & fertility, on writing & purpose, on lockdown & livelihood—it's a joy to have found a book that resonates the feelings & ideas that sparked, flickered, & ignited during a panic-stricken year. It may not be the best book that readers hoped it to be—one that opines & acts on every silent struggle—but it is one resounding voice, evidently lacking in relatable courses of action.
