Started today - so good👍

So grateful to Claire Fuller for recommending Shirley Jackson, who is hardly known in Austria. Liked this one though 'We have always lived in the castle' is my favourite.

I tried so hard to warm to this novel but I simply couldn't. Maybe this is because I am not American and white. What confused me most was the fact that not once in the book did any of the characters investigate into the alleged rape. Instead they all accepted their fates. Is the American legal system really that unreliable and random that African-Americans must fear the worst? If it is, take action when casting your vote next time!

Ein außerordentlich bemerkenswertes Buch: Die Protagonistin Anne, gebürtige Französin und Pianistin, die in Österreich lebt, nimmt sich ein Freijahr, um mehr Zeit für sich zu haben. Doch findet sie keinerlei Kraft zu etwss Produktivem. Anne vermutet, dass ihr Mann Thomas eine Freundin hat, und imaginiert das Leben der beiden. Als Geister bevölkern sie ihre Welt, während ihr eigenes Leben außer Tritt gerät. Wortgewaltig, scharf beobachtet!

Obwohl mehrfach empfohlen, wurde ich mit dem Roman nie richtig warm. Zwar versteht es der Autor, mit Sprache zu jonglieren, aber über 400 Seiten wird das selbstverliebte Geschreibsel des Protagonisten mühsam. Am beeindruckendsten fand ich die "Fingerübungen", die für sich stehen können. Ich bin einfach nicht die richtige Leserin für das Buch: Weder die Gefängnisgeschichte, noch das kranke Sektenleben der Familie samt Guru konnten mich fesseln.

"Nein" ist ein Wort mit zwei Köpfen. Wenn es ein anderer sagt, tut es weh. Wenn man es selber sagen darf, macht es stark.
