My copies of the second and third books in the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb just arrived and I couldn‘t be more excited (especially after a frustrating night of work). Going to crush out a 30 mile bike ride and then settle in with this tonight. #royalassassin #robinhobb #farseertrilogy #indiebookstores #shoplocal

I didn‘t realize there are 7 more books in the series, lol. I look forward to reading them at some future date. Also, this is a terrible phone photo of actually beautiful Svalbard. This is what I envision Arrakis looking like, except hot & less water/moisture.

annahenke I‘m very interested to see how they do the new movie adaptation 4y
caffeinated.wayfarer @annahenke Me too. Admittedly I haven‘t seen any earlier adaptations either so it will all be new to me! 4y
annahenke @caffeinated.wayfarer I haven‘t either but I‘m intrigued! 4y

This is long overdue, but this collection was good. Some stories were definitely better than others, but I overall enjoyed it.

WTF? Are vampires a thing in 2100?

caffeinated.wayfarer *spoiler alert*. It‘s aliens. This particular story is bonkers. 5y

One story down, nine to go. I may end up breaking this collection of short stories up while reading something else at the same time.

Cosmos_Moon_River Ooo, this sounds interesting! 5y
caffeinated.wayfarer @Cosmos_Moon So far it is! I think I maybe missed the point on the second story, but even when I don‘t get it, I feel like a still maybe learn something new. 5y

Just finished reading this book. I probably would have stayed up all night, but for once I decided to be sensible and get some sleep. This book is firmly science-fiction, but *definitely* seems like something that could happen. Plus there were some plot twists that I did not see coming, so yay! Artemis even gets a shoutout!

“They all knew of the Mercury 13. In the mid-twentieth century, at the same time as the Mercury 7 had all the fame for being space flight pioneers, thirteen women had tested just as well if not better than the men on the aptitude tests. But they‘d never reached space, even after bringing their case all the way to a congressional hearing”. **i know a fair amount of space travel and this was literally brand new information to me **

This arrived yesterday and I‘m excited to start this near-future sci-Fi that‘s billed as “The Martian” meets “The Handmaid‘s Tale”!

Cosmos_Moon_River Oooo, sounds interesting! 5y

The Season of Passage | Christopher Pike

Pickpick

Lapis Luna Zinfandel pairs well with a book where the color red and red liquid play a prominent role. The book is a bit dated in many ways & not really PC by today‘s standards and the medical stuff often made me 🥴but it‘s still an enjoyable bit of sci-Fi horror. Also, why was I reading this when I was 11?

A domestic violence call can result in a nuisance citation, which can lead to eviction. “Evicted” can be grim, but it‘s a very worthwhile read and of particular relevance right now.

Cosmos_Moon_River So sad and real for many. 5y

The Season of Passage | Christopher Pike
post image

Started a re-read of Christopher Pike‘s “A Season of Passage”, a favorite from my youth. The most basic plot of the book revolves around a U.S. manned mission to Mars, but it‘s a sci-fi/horror book that also involves a story within a story. I recommend you check it out if that sounds like your wheelhouse, but fair warning, it was originally written in the 70s & after 17 pages I suspect some things may not hold up very well.

Nurse nitpick: jugular vein, not artery. It‘s not a big deal & it creates the correct visual for the reader, but I was briefly ripped out of the story being told by the error. It also happens with TV shows & movies. What are some things that you nitpick in books or other forms of media?

SamAnne Anachronisms. The wrong plant life or landscape descriptions that make no sense. 5y

I took a significant break from this book, in part because I went on vacation and didn‘t want to carry a hardcover book with me, but mostly because I got distracted by a bunch of fun fiction. I‘m looking forward to diving back into it, though I may set it aside again when books 2 & 3 of the Farseer Trilogy get delivered.

saguarosally It‘s an interesting read in these times. 5y
caffeinated.wayfarer @saguarosally That‘s kind why I picked it back up vs. one of my other options 😬 5y

I don‘t know why it took me so long to pick this book up, but now that I have, I need to complete the Farseer Trilogy ASAP and then promptly read everything else Robin Hobb has written!

“I know not what the others felt, but in my heart was nothing but hate for him. But it was a hatred so strong that it spawned a resolution not to be broken by such a man”

caffeinated.wayfarer I relate to this, not so much the part about hating the other person because I truly don‘t have the energy to hate someone. But the part about not being broken, not giving someone the satisfaction? Yes. Esp in nursing, where you still have older nurses that try to make life awful for newbies. I figure the person that targeted me must have a miserable & pathetic life and I wasn‘t going to give her the satisfaction of making me 😢 or give up. 5y
