Dune
Dune | Frank Herbert
"Unique...I know nothing comparable to it except Lord of the Rings."--Arthur C. ClarkeHere is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family--and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction. Frank Herbert's death in 1986 was a tragic loss, yet the astounding legacy of his visionary fiction will live forever.

Gosh I'm really torn about this book. It's a case of if this book were written present day would it be as well loved? I really liked the mythology presented in Dune and the world building is stunning. I didn't like the idea of Space Muslims. The author seemed like he was taking words like hajj and jihad and twist them from their true meaning. I don't consider myself to be super "woke" or anything like that but I am sensitive at least. #53 #2019

Anyone else reading it for the first time, again? Looking forward to the movie?

I finally got to know this famous classic! 🎉 And I'm very impressed by the world building and all tje details Herbert put into his book. It's so fascinating!

Buechersuechtling Do you plan to read all of them or “just” the first one❓ (I can‘t remember all the details, to be honest, I probably forgot most of the plot but what I do remember is, that I really was struck when I read it many, many years ago.) 4w
Jari-chan @Buechersuechtling I'm planning on reading at least the main books - which will take a while ? after that I'll see if I'm going to read the other books as well. "Being struck" is what I feel, too. Even though it sure is hard to remember all the details ? 3w

As soon as I saw the new Deluxe edition of Dune I knew it had to be mine.

Sprayed edges, killer cover, and look at those end pages! 😍

There's also a huge picture on the back of the cover slip, but when it's all spread out, it's so big I can't take a proper picture atm. Gonna try later when I'm at home.

Such a gorgeous edition! ❤️

I read this many, many years ago and recently decided to listen to the audio book. The world building is fantastic. It was a long book that I did enjoy overall but there were patches of awesome. There were scenes/events that I just loved. I was excited to read about a new movie version next year with Josh Brolin and Jason Momoa 😊 Great sci-fi ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Absolutely loved this damn book.
If you want some really good world building, and a literary universe within a single book that has wheels within wheels, give Dune a shot.
It's not known as one of the best sci-fi book ever written for nothing.
I checked it out for myself and absolutely adore it.
Did find it a bit hard to get into at first, as it throws a lot at you, but stick with it and the payoff is worth it.

I finished the first volume from "Dune". The series is one of my favorite.

I love "Dune" not because of its political, religious and other themes, but because of the way the author describes the planet. When I read it, I can feel the sand under my feet and the Sun in my face. The adventure. The wilderness. The silence.

I hate Jessica. She complains all the time. And she controls his son. And I hate that the author made Chani a baby factory.

RaimeyGallant Sounds really interesting. 4mo

Book #55: Dune is often cataloged as one of the greatest science fiction stories ever told and the precursor to all science fiction that has come since. It is also frequently listed as the first book within the bestselling science fiction series of all time. These are all titles that the book has rightfully earned. Dune contains parallels in religion...

Just barely a pick- I liked it mostly because of the intriguing world Herbert created. Political intrigue mixes with religious mysticism in unexpected ways, and it's interesting to see heroes with darker sides: you question their motives in the same way you would with politicians. The characters held me back from liking it more- the dialogue and their inner thoughts were a little stilted. But what a world to explore- worth reading just for that.

Ddzmini This is an epic story with hidden meanings. it was a 1980 hit when the movie came out. I loved it then and now 📖😋 5mo
Billypar @Ddzmini I can see why it became such a hit- Herbert was a true visionary. 5mo
jveezer Never seen that cover. Very Cool. I liked the first book when I read it in the ‘70s but then lost interest a few books into the series.... 5mo

This is a little random, but do you remember that Fatboy Slim song, 'Weapon of Choice' with the video that has Christopher Walken doing an elaborate solo dance routine in a #grandhotel ? Remember that lyric, 'Walk without rhythm, and you won't attract the worm....'? I'm reading Dune now and I came to this part where the characters are walking without rhythm so as not to attract giant desert worms. Coincidence, or was Fatboy Slim a Dune fan?

Billypar @DivineDiana @LeahBergen @batsy @rretzler @tournevis @BarbaraBB @readordierachel Google and Wikipedia seem to agree- looks like a Dune reference. I love this- I need to check out some lists of literary references in pop music- Alice in Wonderland, Lolita, and 1984 come to mind, but I'm sure there's a ton.. 5mo
Billypar @rretzler @tournevis I'm going to have to take another look at the lyrics after I finish it- I'm intrigued that the entire song is about the novel! 5mo
rretzler @Billypar The Cure‘s Killing an Arab - Robert Smith wrote the song about 5mo
rretzler @Billypar A more obvious one - The Police‘s Don‘t Stand So Close to Me references 5mo
Billypar @batsy If the length is a deterrent, I put it on a two week schedule to finish and it's been surprisingly easy to stick to- should finish by Thursday if I meet the remaining targets 🤞 And I'm liking it, so that helps! 5mo
Billypar @readordierachel Ha- agreed: I remember watching it over and over in college. I just read that Spike Jonze directed it, which I didn't know, but it makes sense- I'm a big fan of his work. 5mo
Billypar @rretzler Yeah that's the song for Lolita that came to mind- didn't realize about the Cure song though! That's one I still need to read at some point.. 5mo

BarbaraBB @rretzler Interesting!! I didn‘t know about The Cure and The Police! 5mo

Billypar @Liz_M Glad to bring it to your attention! It's impossible to watch it and not feel a little happier afterwards. 5mo
Billypar @BarbaraBB @rretzler I binged a little on internet lists of songs. I never knew Devo's 'Whip It' was inspired by Gravity's Rainbow. And then there are those I feel like I should have guessed like Sympathy for the Devil being inspired by Master & Margarita. 5mo
Centique That Walken dance is the BEST. Now I need to go watch it again. Thank you for reminding me of this! 😍 5mo
tournevis @rretzler @billypar Not only that, but the single Killing an Arab was banned in Canada for a while until their lawyers prevailed upon authorities that the song was a riff on a real book. 5mo
Billypar @Centique Glad to! It's a good one to watch again when you haven't seen in some time. 5mo
Billypar @tournevis Oh wow- what a misunderstanding! That was in their early days too, so they hadn't had much time to establish their band personality. 5mo
tournevis @Billypar Something like 1979-1981 if my idled brain remembers correctly. Also, Canadian Customs Agency had a hair trigger back then. 5mo

rretzler A great book and a good series - that is until I bailed on book 4. I do plan to go back and reread and finish it off one day. 6mo
Billypar @rretzler I didn't even realize it was a series until I started reading it. Such an impressive achievement to imagine a world in this level of depth- seems like much more than the plot developments. 6mo
rretzler That‘s the beauty of it, I think. The entire society and political intrigues that Herbert created is mind-blowing and wonderful. And his son has continued the series. I‘ve read several of those and they are good too (better than book 4 of the series.) I believe Herbert was influenced by Edgar Rice Burroughs‘ Mars series and Isaac Asimov‘s Foundation series, which are also very good, if perhaps a little dated. 6mo
Suet624 Such a good book. I read it soon after it came out - hundreds of years ago! - and I still have scenes popping up in my mind from it. It‘s on my list to read again. 6mo
Billypar @rretzler A woman on the subway today saw me reading Dune, and she was telling me how it was a favorite and changed her life. She also really liked Children of Dune, but said God Emperor was tough to get through, but the end was good. Interesting about the influences- thanks for those! 6mo
Billypar @Suet624 That's pretty neat to be an original fan of something that would become a classic. I'm a little disappointed that I'm about 5 years too old to have had Harry Potter in my childhood when the first book came out. With this one, I'm still early, but enjoying it so far! 6mo
