As you‘d expect from Cormac McCarthy an extremely well written book . It‘s described as a thriller and there certainly is that aspect to it but it‘s also an exploration into the main characters relationship with his sister and her struggles with mental health . It‘s bleak and sad but a good read .

I don‘t like being too critical of books - everyone has different tastes and it can‘t be easy to write one . But I make an exception for this - it was truly awful and made me embarrassed to be female 🙈!

It gets great reviews and it‘s well written - but it just didn‘t do it for me ! I gave up at 81% which is unusual for me - i probably missed the best bit 🙈.

I really enjoyed this book and learned a huge amount about the Berlin Wall - the story revolves around twin sisters separated in Berlin on the night of the construction of the dividing wall between east and west - really interesting good story line and well written.

This is a compelling read - I found it hard to put down - interesting and unique story - a rather unpleasant husband and father whose outlook on life changes greatly after being rescued from the shadow of his fathers success ! Graham Swift has been around for a while - I don‘t know how I missed him but at least I have the joy of much reading ahead of me from this very clever writer .

This is very clever writing - it‘s written in 4 parts and I confess that during part 1 I was questioning why it won the Pulitzer Prize - but don‘t give up it becomes clearer and clearer - I loved it . It‘s a story of power and maybe love .

Described as a novel , I would say it‘s a book of short stories - the link that binds them is subtle - but each of the 5 stories is beautifully written and a pleasure to read . Really enjoyed it .

Very interesting - it‘s a short read based on the true story of the rape and violation of over 100 women in a Mennonite colony . The book bases its story around the decision making and reasoning of the actions the women decide to take . So interesting rather than riveting I would say .

I rarely give up on a book , but there are so many great books to read why waste your time on something that doesn‘t work for you . This book gets great reviews and they say don‘t be put off by the gaming element ‘ but it was that that finished it for me - the writing is good ,the story line touching but the constant references to gaming drove me mad ! I suspect it‘s an age thing ! But if you aren‘t into gaming I would avoid this !

Cathythoughts Great review. I was on the fence about this one , lots of positive reviews. I‘m going to avoid it. 👍🏻♥️ 6mo
emmasm08 I think that‘s wise Cathy - I suspect you‘d have a similar problem to me - basically I know nothing about gaming or have any inclination too ! 😂😘xxx 6mo

Not sure how I ended up with this on my kindle as I rarely choose a murder mystery but I‘m very glad it did . Good plot , likeable and unlikeable characters ! It started slowly ( probably deliberately) and rather conventionally about a dysfunctional family unit - but it soon became engrossing, complex and slightly strange - all of which I liked ! I did get a little lost at times with the plot - switching between time and consciousness but I coped with it and really enjoyed the book .

Where to start ! - this book is grotesque, brutal , hideous but utterly compelling - I could not put it down ! A virus wipes out the animal population leading to an industry of cannibalism - and just when you think there is a flicker of goodness emerging ….
It‘s an Argentinian translation - short and very disturbing - not for the faint hearted - I think it will stay with me for a long time .

Cathythoughts Great review. I still remember it and that ending. Great book. As you say , not for the faint hearted 👍🏻❤️ 7mo

I thought I‘d love this book - but i didn‘t ! It was difficult to engage with - I lost interest and probably didn‘t read it in enough detail and as a result found myself confused over who was who . It follows three women‘s lives over several decades one being Virginia Woolf - it‘s written very well - but not for me I‘m afraid .

I then found myself in a position where I thoroughly enjoyed it and couldn‘t put it down ! I was not expecting that …. It‘s sort of a spoof on the 2016 Brexit referendum, Russian involvement and USA presidential election - very close to the bone at times and fascinating reading .

The book is well written , sold as a love story with a musical background . I often enjoy books even when I don‘t warm to the characters, but this was an exception- the main male character was incredibly annoying and tedious . I don‘t give up on books so I read it to the end but I‘m so glad I‘ve finished it !!!! But we are all different the critics at the time described as a masterpiece !!!!
