This beautiful RF book is about diversity in the world and how we are all human. No matter what we look like, how we talk, what we believe in, we are all humans with emotions. It is a lovely RA story that can incorporate a great lesson about diversity for young readers! #ucflae3414su20

bsiqueira https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/whoever-you-are This website provides excellent activities that can be used with both educators and families in order to teach diversity! The UDL strategy that aligns with this is 4.1 “use various methods for response and navigation.” As well as ESOL #16 “Integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities.” 4y
Viviannef Love this book to teach diversity! Izzy did a great job in class to turn this book into a S :) But I agree this would be a great book for a RA as well! And thank you for your resource, I found this page from the resource you provided and the self portrait idea is so cute! https://www.rif.org/sites/default/files/Support_Materials/Whoever-Edu-Extension.... 4y
Ameyer32 What a great book to teach and bring awareness to diversity in the classroom. I loved Izzy's rendition as a ST and I think it would also be great as a RA as you have stated above. Great job! (edited) 4y

Whoever You Are is a NF book for young readers. This book is about how people all over the world do a lot of the same things, but may look different. The book brings you around the world to see other cultures and generations. A great way to use this in the classroom is a RA, this way the teacher can read it to the class and then they can have a group discussion. www.rif.org has amazing resources to extend the lesson. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Whoever You Are is about the similarities and differences of people all around the world. The most important similarity is that everyone has a heart. This book teaches diversity, inclusion, and acceptance. For this reason, I believe this book would be great for building a tolerant classroom community. Also, because of it's written style, it can be used for independent reading. The terminology is simple and it is repetitive.
#ucflae3414sp20

ShardaeP UDL 2.1 Clarify vocabulary and symbols: The repeated words from the story can be added to a word wall. From there, activities can be done using the terms.
ESOL Teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts: The vocabulary is very important to the main idea of the text. The terms can be taught explicitly beforehand.
4y

This RF, picture book is excellent for a RA! Having it in your classroom library will help students learn about differences and similarities of people. The author website have an audio version that can be helpful for students to listen the story again. https://memfox.com/books/whoever-you-are/ This website will help you offer UDL 1.2 for alternative in auditory info and also provide EL #14 with the slower and redundant speech. #UCFLAE3414SP20

This RF picturebook teaches readers about accepting diversity and how similar we are. This is a great book to RA! One UDL & EL strategy is 9.3, develop self-assessment and motivation, and 3, encourage self talk (positive thinking). This link provides excellent extension activities using this book: http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/moving-toward-acc... #UCFLAE3414SP20

SequoiaC123 You could also teach about diversity, acceptance (of self and others), and culture and even make connections with the students‘ cultures like the flag activity we saw in SSE 3112! (edited) 4y
Keishla.O I love the theme of this book. Sometimes it‘s hard for children to see that we are all not so different from each other. This book would be a great demonstration that we‘re all similar in different ways. Thank you for sharing! I‘ll have to get myself a copy. 4y

This RF book Whoever You Are by Mem Fox, tells the story that many people may be different than you, but everyone‘s hearts are the same. RA- it‘s important for children to know that even though people may look & do different things, we are all the same.
https://witsprogram.ca/pdfs/schools/books/whoever-you-are/whoever-you-are.pdf. UDL 8.3 is good because collaboration and community are crucial points in the book. #UCFLAE3414SP20

“Hidden Figures The Story Of Four Black women and The Space Race” by Margot Lee Shetterly and Laura Freeman (ages 6-9) Is a great book and now a movie about four African American women who conquer the world of science math and engineering while overcoming sexism, racism, and segregation. This book shows how 3 women paved the way for so many women. This also gives small biographies on these women in the back of the book.

Alexush This Book Is a biography that you can read aloud or do a readers theater with. This is also cool because you can watch the movie after the class RT. This https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Hidden-Figures-Movie-Guide-Questions... is a 4th grade lesson plan that you may use. The UDL id use for this book is 8.3 fostering collaboration and community. 4y

Whoever You Are is a RF book written by Mem Fox and illustrated by Leslie Straub. This picture book is perfect for showing children that even though people may look different and act different, it doesn't mean we are different. It is a great message to send children at any elementary grade level. #UCFLAE3414F19

JRone The lesson plan http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/moving-toward-acc... is perfect for the book because it allows students to move toward acceptance in their school and in their lives. This book is also perfect for an RA. 4y
JRone A UDL strategy for this book would be 3.2, highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas and relationships. This would help children connect with people who don't necessarily look like them. An EL strategy would be #24, incorporate the culture and the language of second language learners into the curriculum. This shows students where everyone is from and how it differs from where they live or why they do things differently. 4y
Erinehart I haven‘t read this book yet, but your summary makes me want to know more! 4y
sbombasi This book looks great for the classroom where students will notice their peers are different in many ways, but also similarities which is very important for ELs as you mentioned! 4y

By author Mem Fox and illustrated by Leslie Stub, this Caldecott winner, RF book is great for any grade. In this PB, it shows how people all over the world may look different, speak other languages, live in different looking houses, does not mean we are different. Everyone still hurts the same, laugh the same, and love the same. It is a great message to teach any student at any level. #ucflae3414f19

Lrobertson This book is great for RA. Having students connect text to self and text to world. Have students make graphic organizers, like a Venn diagram, and compare and contrast the other students in their class with them. A great lesson for this text is on https://witsprogram.ca/pdfs/schools/books/whoever-you-are/whoever-you-are.pdf. This lovely RF PB titled “Whoever You Are“ written by Mem Fox and illustrated by Leslie Staub is a wonderful RA book for your K classroom. Whoever You Are dives into the concept of diversity and how each and everyone of us comes from somewhere different and may look or talk different, but that we all get sad, happy, and love the same. This is a fantastic book to read to your young students so they can begin to learn about diversity! #UCFLAE3414F19

Camrynm A useful EL strategy to use for this book would be 16: Integrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities. This strategy would be useful because the teacher could ask questions about diversity before, during, and after the book to see the students prior-knowledge on the subject and then find out what they learned. The UDL principle I would use would be 4.1: Vary the methods for response and navigation. 4y
Camrynm I could ask the students questions and either have them verbally respond or I could have them raise their hand if the answer pertains to them. Here is a word search for your K classroom that your students could use to recognize vocabulary. https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/word-search/whoever-you-are-word-search 4y

Whoever you are by Mem Fox and illustrated by Leslie Staub is such a great book. Even though it isn‘t award winning, it is a good book to incorporate into the classroom. It teaches kids about inclusion and diversity. The book talks about how no matter where you‘re from, what language you speak, what type of school you go to, the way you look, and the foods you eat, you still have feelings. You feel the same joys and the same pains. #ucflae3414f19

alexblanco @alexblanco This book is NF. One teaching strategy I would use for this book would be RA. I chose RA because I feel as if it is a good way for teachers to teach about diversity and to make sure they are understanding thoroughly. One standard that I found that would work well with this book is linked here https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewStandard/Preview/5680 4y
alexblanco @alexblanco An EL strategy I would use for this book would be to incorporate the culture and the language of second language learners into my curriculum. Loved this RF by Mem Fox and Leslie Staub that promotes diversity and acceptance of others no matter who they are. Students can talk about their similarities and differences just like shown in the book.

fquadri After conducting the read aloud, teachers can ask students to complete activities pertaining to the book. Whoever you are is a wonderful read by author Mem Fox and illustrated by Leslie Staub! It is a RF read and has so many important messages. The UDL for this book is 2.1 because there are a lot of vocabulary words and symbols to incorporate in the story. There are several ESOL techniques to use but one would be number 2 because all the kids should participate while reading this story. All the children in your class can easily to relate to this book!

AmyPerezCubas An activity I would do with my class is go around the room saying how they relate to this story. Another is asking what kind of home they live in since the characters in the book lived in such different places. I would hand out a worksheet with it saying what they love, what makes them sad, and what makes them happy. I‘m sure so many kids would have the same responses and they would see how similar they are to one another. #UCFLAE3414SuB18 6y
DrSpalding Reading is fundamental is a fabulous website. Good choice. 6y

RossoS This book is one of my favorites!! I really liked the resource you provided, I love all the fun activities the website includes. I will definitely be adding this book to my library to share with my future students 👌 6y
Gabylaurel10 I love that you related this book to learning about cultures! I have a good lesson plan from another class about cultures if you ever need it! 6y
Kaelya When reading this book I saw a lot of neat artwork to show the different cultures that are portrayed in the book! 6y
DianaHerrera I haven‘t read this book yet, but it sounds like a great book to read to have other students understand the different cultures there are. Students can learn a lot about each other when they are introduced to other ethnics and backgrounds🙂 @AmyPerezCubas 6y

Whoever You Are is a NF children‘s picture book written by Mem Fox and illustrated by Leslie Staub. This would be a great book to bring in during the first week of class. This book is about unity between people of different cultures. The context of the book is fairly simple which is why I would recommend this book for Kindergarten and First grade. I would either use this book for a RA or PR based on my class‘ reading levels. Post continued below⬇️

AmeliaS21 I think this book would be great for PR because the text isn‘t complicated. Having your students read together and build a relationship is important in every classroom. This book is a fun way for your students to do that. UDL: 2.1, 8.3 ESOL: 2, 4, 14, 26 Continue reading below ⬇️ (edited) 6y
AmeliaS21 This link provides resources and activities you can link to this book. One activity I found interesting was a “book walk” where the students go around the room and look at the pages of the book. You can have the students either write down or discuss the different landscapes they see. I really liked this book because it is important for students to understand the different cultures they may see in their classrooms. 6y

DrSpalding Love the idea of partner reading and the book walk. Technically it is not non-fiction because the children in the story are not real. What do you think the correct genre is? 6y
AmeliaS21 @DrSpalding @DrSpalding I wasn‘t completely sure of the genre. When I looked it up it said it fell under the category of NF which is why I put that! I do see now that since the children aren‘t real that it may fall under RF. 6y
DrSpalding Correct! I read this book aloud to my social studies class two weeks ago. We need more books like this! 6y

We may look different or live differently or speak a different language but we all love and hurt and laugh and are connected by that same shared humanity.

And just as I'm getting ready to take this back to the library I read that Mem Fox (the author) is vowing not to return to the US after she was poorly treated by US customs officers on her most recent visit. Perhaps more people need to read this book.
