The Drowning Girl: A Memoir | Caitln R. Kiernan
Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ we keep our ghosts alive and sometimes we invent them altogether, we give them to other people and we pretend we have exorcised them and sometimes a story is not factual but it is true. this book is incredible and you should read it

please read this book, please, I feel like it's resonating through my entire body, it's written so perfectly! it is impossible to describe which is honestly probably the point but it is about ghosts and girls and I can feel it becoming very important to me

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ beautifully textured, technical in the best way. sometimes I had to stop and stare at a sentence, the phrasing. a book like a painting.

HEX | Thomas Olde Heuvelt

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ so good! really inventive but somehow very familiar-feeling, which is what makes it so eerie. I didn't see the end coming, which I appreciate, and the translation/English reworking is lovely. also, what a perfect way to start an author's note.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I am not sure even what to say except that this book is incredible. The dark underbelly of girlhood, the ties that bind. Just absolutely stunning.

The Fireman | Joe Hill

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ not as good as nos4a2, but miles and miles better than the stand. I get what he's trying to do with all the references and for the most part I appreciate it, but a couple times I really wanted him to stand on his own feet more. there is a fine line between homage and recycling, I guess?

I don't know why I expect these books to give me answers when I know they won't; how could they? so that was a disappointment, but even so, this was heartbreaking and beautiful the whole way through.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ one of my favorite favorite books. I wrote a treatment of this for the stage in high school and lost it and I'm still mad about it. anyway.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ ghhggg. I wanted this to be good and parts of it were! genuinely unsettling! but the way it's written drove me a little bit bananas and I thought it was predictable for the most part. I feel like this could have gone somewhere better than it did.

she pulled it out at the end there! there were a lot of parts I was underwhelmed by but I read the whole thing and I did cry, so there you go. also, a very good use of poetry throughout.

SGJ Good title, anyway. 8y
