Another book club pick, this book is Fine but I don't think it really works. Way too much wind up for not enough pitch.
This is a reread for me. I remember being blown away the first time; I thought this was so smart and incredible and challenging. I feel very similar this second time. The parent/child arguments, the mob mentality, the darkness of suicidal ideation, the us v them that always happens in small towns… there‘s so much going on here. Definitely dated in a few places, but still good.
Thank you, @peanutnine, for the book and chocolate. Thanks, @MaleficentBookDragon, for hosting the #Jolabokaflodswap.
A very scary horror with a great central concept. I actually saw this on a tiktok recommendation and thought it looked way too scary then the concept worked its way into my head and I couldn‘t forget it so I had to actually read it lol. The ending was VERY intense (check tws) but I genuinely loved it. I really appreciate how this writer always does rewarding endings that feel thematically fitting without being predictable
🎃🎃it started out strong and I was deeply engrossed, then it went tailspinning into a mess. TRIGGER WARNING: animal cruelty
This book was perfect - great premise and execution. This is not a scary story - it is a tension filled story - a constant “omg, what is going to happen next? and omg, did they just do that?“

#ScarathlonDailyPrompts #Day19 #Curse This was one of the very first books I bought from BD on recommendation from Littens 6yrs ago! Wow. Time flies⏳A whole town is cursed in this spooky novel. In Black Spring there‘s a 17th century Witch that wanders the streets, enters your home & can stand next to your bed while you sleep. Oh, her eyes & mouth are sewn shut😱And you can never leave. Might reread this for #Scarathlon #TeamSlaughter 6pts
I absolutely love this spooky read about the cursed town of Black Spring and the witch that haunts it. I‘ve read it twice and I‘m sure I‘ll read it again when the English translation of the sequel (Oracle) comes out. Squee!! #scarathlondailyprompts #cursed #teamslaughter
The witch put a #curse on the town - the story takes place in the present day, the town must follow a lot of rules (to keep the witch from getting mad) that keep the citizens isolated from the outside world - but then....some people mess with the witch.....
and things start to go wrong for the citizens of the town.
Listening to audiobook - really enjoying it -

Black Rock, a seemingly typical town in upstate NY, except for the presence of Katherine, a 17th century witch who cursed the town and haunts it to this day. The town does its best to keep their witch a secret to the outside world through an advanced security system and a collection of rules and regs all townies must follow. Over the course of a very slow build, things go terribly go terribly wrong!

I finished HEX early this a.m. Much of it reads like a parody…what would happen if a modern town were haunted by a witch? Well in the case of Black Rock, create a government and security system intended to suppress this info from slipping to the outside world and to allow locals to pretend that everything is fine. Be prepared for the witch to show up randomly at your family dinner or during those intimate moments with your spouse (mood killer 🤣).
A 300 year old witch with her eyes and mouth sewn shut walks the streets of Black Spring, NY. When local teens start to experiment with her tolerance levels, which is prohibited by the Emergency Decree, things start to go sideways. This slow burn was PHENOMINAL!! Even more interesting, it was rewritten to give it an American location, as it was originally written in Dutch and set in a small Dutch village.
I like scary books! This one, which I listened to on Audible, might be better read on the page. There are some creepy moments to be sure. Interesting twist at the end! I love the witch, wrapped in chains with her eyes and mouth stitched shut. Just make sure she doesn‘t get loose…
5 spooky stars. While this was creepy in some parts I wasn‘t really ever scared. Only maybe uneasy. This could be because I was rooting for the witch lol
Great take on mob mentality and humans not learning from the mistakes of their ancestors.

Thomas Olde Heuvelt is a new auto-buy for me. Just when you think things will get resolved, something else thickens the plot. And then another spin, and then another, and then… I continued this pattern for 250 pages, through two meals, and then suddenly.. it was over.
Hex is the kind of gruesome accident you can‘t help but compulsively watch. It‘s the human race at its ugliest. It‘s squirmy and horrifying and spooky and I simply loved it.
The beginning of this book is very, very, very slow. Things do go utterly mad later, but it‘s a slow burn to get there. I know a lot of people enjoyed it, but it wasn‘t my thing and I found the characters completely unlikeable.

A great twist to the classic haunting trope. A small town is cursed by an ancient witch whose eyes and mouth are sewn shut. The witch can show up anywhere from the end of your bed to under the street light. Creepy, dark, and a fresh take on hauntings, HEX is a must-read for all horror lovers. A great addition to your Halloween Read Pile!

This one took me a long time to figure out. I hope in the end it fits somehow. The book is about an evil #witch.
#LittensDressedInBlood #Day7 For #campfiretales I‘ve brought one out of the vault, this is a book I reviewed in my first six months on Litsy, 5yrs ago. It‘s a creepy witchy Halloween story about a town that‘s cursed. Black Spring is a Hudson Valley town that‘s haunted by a 17th century witch who roams the town with her eyes & mouth sewn shut & has the ability to appear anywhere she wills, including your home. It definitely freaked me out!
This was my #doublespin for June. I've read this book in Dutch, the original language. It turned out to be a late night, I have had little sleep. It was a little creepy, especially with all the night sounds. I enjoyed the story and the ending. Some of the sentences and language used felt a bit weird. I think I might visit Beek sometime when I'm walking the Pieterpad trail in my country.
TBR since July 1st. 2020; 565 pages.
@TheAromaofBooks
It took me longer than expected to really start enjoying this one, but I'm glad I didn't bail.
This story of a town with a witch who wanders around and everyone tries to hide her from the outside world was such a cool concept. Although it was slow to build, and not quite as spooky as I expected, once the witch starts behaving erratically things really take off and I couldn't stop reading.
Oh my stars!!!! This books I a crazy ride. It starts off slow and the build is slow, but once you hit the action - hold on tight!!! There were so many twists and turns I was not expecting and the ending left my jaw on the floor...
Highly recommend!!!!
🤫🤫🤫🤫🤫
It is a creepy concept, although this tale was different than I‘d anticipated. I do like books that look at the horror of human nature but I don‘t think the execution worked completely for me. I‘m still confused about some things and with the slow pacing, my brain didn‘t always completely connect to the details. I also felt that the witch‘s history came in the form of a huge info dump.

October 4th: The Blair Witch Project
Hex is the English language adaptation of a Dutch horror novel by the same name & author. A witch terrorizes a town in Hudson Valley NY for hundreds of years until it finally reaches a point where the town goes on lockdown in an attempt to keep people safe. But the witch still haunts to woods, the streets and their homes. And she won‘t stop until she gets what she wants.
Terrifying, supernatural, psychological, HEAVY--a story that will challenge your notion of what is scarier, a 300 year old witch whose eyes & mouth are stitched shut & who walks a cursed town for all to see OR human nature, carefully controlled, structured and orderly until its not. ☠
Well that was dark.
But it was also thrilling, scary and extremely difficult to put down.
A story that examines familial love, superstition and who we are as a species and how we treat each other when all hell breaks loose...kinda like now.
It took me a bit to get into this book but I forgive it because the ending was pretty perfect. Creepy with a mix of Blair Witch and The Lottery vibes.
Popcorn and horror ❤️
Also, super impressed to know that this author is Dutch and instead of just letting a translator translate his book as- is, he rewrote some of it to have it set in America.
I also hear the endings are different.
So really, the most logical conclusion is that I have to learn Dutch now 🤷♀️
1. The hypnotist by Lars Kepler. Read in English.
2. For me, English is a foreign language, but for you I read books in Dutch and rarely Frisian. Both are my mother tongue. But for the most part I read in English. Haven't yet read a Dutch book this year.
The tagged book is a Dutch, translated to English, author.
For everyone else, I'm curious for your answers.

I'm always a sucker for a good scary book and this one did not disappoint. From the creepiness in the first chapter all the way to the ending, where if I were watching the movie version I'm pretty sure I would have closed my eyes. Lol. The only complaint was the ending seemed somewhat rushed but even that didn't take away from the story.
Any friends out there who‘ve read the Dutch version? After reading the acknowledgements I need to know how that one ended?! This book absolutely rocked me. I felt the townspeople‘s madness seeping from the pages, infecting my mind with fear. It was amazing.
This was super creepy and the last book for #LMPBC! I enjoyed the storyline and the writing, although so many of the characters made me want to scream. It was certainly creepy, but less so than I expected. Even with a witch on the scene, it felt realistic. At least until the end. I really did not like the last 30 pages or so (felt so rushed), and I'm curious how the Dutch version ended. Any Dutch Littens that have read the original??
The perfect book to finish on Halloween 🎃 It normally takes quite a bit for a book to really creep me out, and this one succeeded.
