Girls on Fire
Girls on Fire | Robin Wasserman
This is not a cautionary tale about too much - or the wrong kind - of fucking. This is not a story of bad things happening to bad girls. I say this because I know you, Dex, and I know how you think. I'm going to tell you a story, and this time, it will be the truth. Hannah Dexter is a nobody, ridiculed at school by golden girl Nikki Drummond and bored at home. But in their junior year of high school, Nikki's boyfriend walks into the woods and shoots himself. In the wake of the suicide, Hannah finds herself befriending new girl Lacey and soon the pair are inseparable, bonded by their shared hatred of Nikki. Lacey transforms good girl Hannah into Dex, a Doc Marten and Kurt Cobain fan, who is up for any challenge Lacey throws at her. The two girls bring their combined wills to bear on the community in which they live; unconcerned by the mounting discomfort that their lust for chaos and rebellion causes the inhabitants of their parochial small town, they think they are invulnerable. But Lacey has a secret, about life before her better half, and it's a secret that will change everything . . .Starting - and ending - with tragedy, Girls on Fire stands alongside The Virgin Suicides in its brilliant portrayal of female adolescence, but with a power and assurance all its own.

Not sure how I feel about this book. It was gripping and possibly well-written but also made me feel as though I needed a shower. As a teen in the early 90s, I liked the references to grunge and Nirvana; as a mother of a teenage girl who was suspended this week for spraying hand sanitizer on the candles in the school chapel, it is terrifying.
I did consider giving it a so-so, but ultimately this did not ring true for me.

I devoured this book. I had to sit back and think for a minute after I finished it. It was just so dark, but beautifully written and well though out. The characters just sink into your brain and you can‘t get them out. There is so much to this book - 90s culture, music, feminism and a haunting story about broken girls who succumb to a darkness that I didn‘t expect. This book is excellent, but very difficult subject matter.

If all the hormones and drama and internal torture and revenge fantasies boiling inside teenage girls actually boiled over into reality. Very dark and twisted.

"It was always another thing, being a girl." I don't think we can really appreciate the truth of this statement when we are young. In adulthood, it's glaringly obvious in every facet of life.

I just can‘t - I made it to 66% and when stuff from The Craft (a movie I loved 😀) started happening I had to stop. I just didn‘t like this book, I tried longer than I should have and now, nope. Done.

ClairesReads Worth bailing on- I persisted and was SUPER underwhelmed 6y

Kaye @Readage I know it sounds weird, but I like books like this that really dig in emotionally, so you can learn something about life from it. This one definitely did that for me.. I‘ve heard some people have pretty negative opinions, too, so I think it‘s all in what you like. 6y

Just finished this and I don‘t really know what to say about it. I was tempted to give up a couple of times, but felt that I had to see it out. These girls are messed up and I spent quite a few pages wishing Hannah/Dex would just run away from Lacey. It was longer than it should have been I think, felt kind of dragged out. My next book will have to be super fun and light to balance this out.

This has been on my TBR pile for so long that I have forgotten when I picked it up! It looks like it should be a good read, so I‘m heading to bed VERY early to get stuck in (and hopefully to catch some 💤💤 as I haven‘t slept well this week because of my rotten cough 😷)

I can't stop thinking about this book. It's intense, dark and unexpected. It takes place during 1991/1992 and one of the characters is obsessed with Nirvana and the descriptions we're so vivid that I had to listen to Nirvana while reading this book!

I am all over the place with my feelings about this book. I am 40 and I was a teen in the 90s. I see parts of my younger self in both Hannah and Lacey. I knew Nikki. I really felt like these characters were well drawn and the crazy obsessive teenage friendship was well done. There was a part of this story that really felt false to me and kept this from being a 5 star read, but spoilers so I won't share.

Disturbing, fascinating, problematic, un-put-downable. I understand the mixed reviews but for this grunge kid, the time and place made me forgive the somewhat outlandish teenage drama. If you like a dark and twisty story, graduated between 86 and 92, love post punk or all of the above, I recommend this one.

I couldn't do it. As someone else had commented, it felt like the author was just (unnecessarily) trying to go for the shock factor. The language, the situations....maybe I was just too much of a goody-goody in my teenage years, but I just wasn't enjoying it and I have too many other books I would rather get to than waste my time with this one.

L_auren Agreed! I recommend Marlena as the better alternative to this one 7y
Coleen @L_auren I actually did not love Marlena either, but at least I did finish that one. 😉 7y
L_auren Ha! Okay that's good. I felt like Marlena scratched the itch that this book gave me. Though I didn't love either I was glad to have read Marlena. This one not so much 7y

I know this book is getting a lot of love but I hated it... and yet I couldn't stop reading it. Hannah aka Dex and Lacey have one of the most destructive friendships ever. I kept wanting to yell at them to stop. And omg there's this one scene with Dex at a party that was just awful.

Kristy_K I also didn't like it. I couldn't finish it. 7y

This was set in (fictional?) Battle Creek, PA, but having grown up in a suburb of Detroit, I kept picturing Battle Creek, MI. I had a best friend in high school who was Lacey to my Hannah, minus about 75% of the crazy (and with none of the violence!). Still, she led and I followed, into more trouble than I want to remember. You couldn't pay me enough to go back to those angsty teen years, but I enjoyed the fictional journey. 👍

Not exactly sure how I feel about this book. At times it was insightful and sadly beautiful; at others, Wasserman seemed to be going for the shock factor and it felt inauthentic. I have a little trouble with books where I don't really like or empathize with ANY of the characters, and this was one of those. Overall, though, it kept me interested and felt very original. 3.5 stars.

Today's #tbt - a book that I can't stop thinking about even though I read it weeks ago (and my current staff pick).

"'Girls had to believe in everything but their own power, because if girls knew what they could do, imagine what they might.'
Be careful. This book has the potential to burn it all down."
