Extras | Scott Westerfeld

The fourth book in the Uglies series, this science fiction novel covers a reality where whoever is getting the most buzz is victorious. Popularity is the only thing that matters. If your rank is low you are considered a nobody, an outcast, an "extra." http://www.bookrags.com/studyguide-extras-uglies/#gsc.tab=0 #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding I have not heard of this series. I am assuming it is YA correct? 8y

JarecS That's a really cool and different concept for a book. Definitely seems interesting 8y

Night | Elie Wiesel

This is an autobiography of young Elie Wiesel and his father's horrors in a Nazi concentration camp. It is very descriptive and personal. I found myself getting attached to his story and very upset that this happened to him. To learn more about the author go to http://www.pbs.org/eliewiesel/life/henry.html #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding PBS is an excellent resource to cite. This book is appropriate for high school however. Be sure to include elementary age appropriate books as that is the degree you are seeking. Correct? 8y
JarecS I love books about the Holocaust because they bring an array of emotions into it but an autobiography seems really interesting. 8y

This beloved book is about a tortoise who took off his shell so that he could run faster. Little did he know, there's danger lurking in every corner. Animal fantasy at its finest, here is an audio clip: https://youtu.be/upQczzmrIsM #UCFLAE3414sp17

David Shannon's realistic fiction picture book captures the life of little David who always seems to be getting in trouble. Five year old David in the story had a similar upbringing to David Shannon's own life and he portrays that nicely in print. This book is a Caldecott Honor Book! Learn more here: http://nodavidshannon.com/books/ #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding This simple story based on the author's real life, is an excellent mentor text to use for young writers writing about themselves. 8y

This awesome book is great to cover the math standards in your classroom! All of the illustrations in the book are actual size- hence the title. The picture book is expository nonfiction and Steve Jenkins does an amazing job bringing the animals to life. Bravo! #UCFLAE3414sp17

AlanaA I haven't gotten the chance to read this book yet, but I really want to because I think it would be really helpful to even just use as a reference in the classroom! (edited) 8y

Raymie Nightingale | Kate DiCamillo

Mehso-so

His historical fiction novel features the life of a young girl in central Florida who is dealing with the repercussions of her father abandoning her mother and her. But Raymie has a plan - a plan that will make her famous, a plan that will bring her father home. A little slow in the beginning but it does pick up and has really great character development. A great choice for young readers! #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding Nice review Melanie. I do think you will have children in fourth and fifth grade that enjoy this novel. 8y
AlanaA It's always hard to get past a book that is slow, but I think intriguing discussions can really bring in your students! 8y

Pickpick

Who doesn't love "A Bad Case of Stripes?" Written and illustrated by David Shannon, this modern fantasy picture book captures the feeling of being different on the first day of school. Little Camilla loves eating Lisa beans (although she won't admit it to her peers). The more she tries to be like everyone else, the more she stands out from the rest - literally! #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding Be sure to proof your work before posting. This book has a wonderful message! Include a website that could assist others with using this book in the classroom.📖 8y
