Don't Look Now (UK) | Daphne Du Maurier

Only half-way through and already amazed. Such a great read.

Tristes Tropiques | Claude Lvi-Strauss

“Journeys, those magic caskets full of dreamlike promises, will never again yield up their treasures untarnished. A proliferating and overexcited civilization has broken the silence of the seas once and for all. The perfumes of the tropics and the pristine freshness of human beings have been corrupted by a busyness with dubious implications, which mortifies our desires and dooms us to acquire only contaminated memories.“

The Birds and Other Stories | Daphne Du Maurier
Pickpick

An excellent book, intricate stories, tragic characters and beautifully crafted sentences. Being a huge fan of Daphne du Maurier, I found this book only made me want to read more of her work.

The Birds and Other Stories | Daphne Du Maurier

“Nat listened to the tearing sound of splintering wood, and wondered how many million years of memory were stored in those little brains, behind the stabbing beaks, the piercing eyes, now giving them this instinct to destroy mankind with all the deft precision of machines.“

There's no such thing as too much of Daphne du Maurier.

Normal People | Sally Rooney

“Being alone with her is like opening a door away from normal life and then closing it behind him.“

“Her body is just an item of property, and though it has been handed around and misused in various ways, it has somehow always belonged to him, and she feels like returning it to him now.“

Devoured this book - such a delicate story, sensitive and rich in texture.

Perplexed about this book - it has a good pace & writing style but oh my, what a terrible set of unrealistic characters, not to mention a predictable & non-convincing story.

Anyone else read this? Would live to hear your thoughts.

Ericalambbrown I just finished this. I‘m giving it a so-so because I didn‘t like any of the main characters. They are all just terribly shallow people. I feel like author tied to use tragedy and eccentricity in place of real character development. This was a vapid little page turner. 4y

Bullshit Jobs: A Theory | David Graeber
Pickpick

A mind-blowing read. Being a big fan if Graeber's writing, I can't help but admire the brilliant ease with which he pinpoints familiar but unnamed concepts & explains the phenomenon of the modern world.

Lanny: A Novel | Max Porter

I gaze down at London from the twenty-third floor of this heated glass box. It‘s as if a gigantic child has vandalised a city-sized circuit board, chucked some bricks in, sprayed it with dirt, started painting it but given up.

Very partial to Ruth Rendell's writing- love her style & stories, this one is no different. Though some parts of the plot are predictable, I enjoyed reading this book. it's a nicely written dark story with a few twists & interesting, flawed characters with many secrets.
