This may be the very first book I've dnfed for real. I just couldn't keep pushing through the snooze fest that this book was. I cared for the female lead at first but by the time I reached maybe half of the book I couldn't bother anymore.

"These tears were a matter of routine. They came for a of the women. They dropped until the clay below them turned to mud. At night, Esi dreamed that if they all cried in unison, the mud would turn to river and they could be washed away into the Atlantic."

Extremely powerful and relevant. More than a warning, 1984 is a deeply unsettling cautionary tale with uncanny parallels between the Oceania it depicts and current affairs in some countries around the globe.

The writing is engaging, the story completely captivating and terrifying.

Definitely a must.

The footnotes are rather on the info dumping side, although they're quite interesting (& sometimes funny.)
The story seems to be about to pick up some pace now that they've reached the Red Church, though.
So far, me likey.
