This book has been GREAT and I encourage anyone interested in feminism, Iceland, fishing (both commercial and subsistence), storytelling, oral history, salt cod or ancient sagas to read this. There are some dry parts but by and large it was a refreshing and fascinating read. #maggireads

I have more appreciation for this than I did when I read it the first time; noir with a strong female lead is squarely in my wheelhouse. My summer of Colson continues.

Pickpick

Like visiting with a friend you haven't seen in a long while, in a place where you used to live. I would read this in the summers growing up, while we sailed around Vancouver Island, and wish our setting was as untouched as the Blanchets found it. This is a perfect read to close out my summer.

So far this feels more like a novella, or a very-long-short-story.

Just putting this one out there. Some days it's too much to contemplate.

Another day of matching book to sky, or trying to, anyway.

Husband caught me nose-deep in rereading this one. I had put it on my library holds a week before the attempted coup, feels timely for obvious reasons.

Feminism, activism, identity, rejecting binaric thinking. Matching my reading material to the sky and the flowers nearby.

Mehso-so

This feels like a pretty accurate representation of the book: Why are we born? What does anything mean? Will we ever know the hows and whos of the world? Will this book ever end? Orchard, orchardist, fruit, description of the natural world, the end.

Vacation reading. 90% of this very long, ponderous, light-on-dialogue book is characters asking themselves questions, no answers ever revealed.

The latest read in my Urban Anthropology Book Club of One--really interesting read so far, written by an evolutionist.

Turns out what 16 year old me thought was bold bad-assery was actually just spoiled bitchery. I hate it when my heroes reveal their ordinary and baser human natures.

Rabbitandraven Hindsight like this is both a super rough and somewhat amusing part of aging, yes? 8y

Headscarves and Hymens | Mona Eltahawy
Mehso-so

If only there was an option between "Pick" and "So-so" but there isn't so you'll just have to pretend with me. Mona is a force of nature, a vital feminist voice, and this is a great primer for someone unfamiliar with patriarchal oppression. I wish she had cited more sources/added a bibliography.

Well this was garbage. I loathe fiction predicated on violence against women and should have known better than to pick this up. Every woman in this book treated poorly or outright assaulted by a man; every man in the book is violent, lecherous or otherwise awful. BOO.
