Seawomen of Iceland
Seawomen of Iceland: Survival on the Edge | Margaret Willson
9 posts | 3 read | 20 to read
The plaque said this was the winter fishing hut of Thur?dur Einarsd?ttir, one of Iceland's greatest fishing captains, and that she lived from 1777 to 1863. "Wait," anthropologist and former seawoman Margaret Willson said. "She??" So began a quest. Were there more Icelandic seawomen? Most Icelanders said no, and, after all, in most parts of the world fishing is considered a male profession. What could she expect in Iceland? She found a surprise. This book is a glimpse into the lives of vibrant women who have braved the sea for centuries. Their accounts include the excitement, accidents, trials, and tribulations of fishing in Iceland from the historic times of small open rowboats to today's high-tech fisheries. Based on extensive historical and field research, Seawomen of Iceland allows the seawomen's voices to speak directly with strength, intelligence, and - above all - a knowledge of how to survive. This engaging ethnographic narrative will intrigue both general and academic readers interested in maritime culture, the anthropology of work, Nordic life, and gender studies.

Thank you Holly for this book & the marginalia!

Women in Iceland since the sagas of the Middle Ages were fishing badasses. Even under Danish colonial rule and a feudal system, women still managed to hold their own.

Introduced 20th century ideas said that women should stay home, but starting in the 1970, a few women started to reclaim their spots on boats.

Wilson does a great job highlighting individual women and contrasting old & new. 4⭐️⬇️

Hooked_on_books Hooray! You‘re welcome and I‘m glad you liked it. I think badasses is definitely the right word. 4y

Seawomen of Iceland looks back at Iceland‘s history as well as the present day, following women‘s roles in fishing and the changes in the industry itself. I found it fascinating and learned so much, including the popularity of the name Thurídur. ? I look forward to passing this along to the rest of my #LMPBC crew. (And my shirt is from Iceland, hence the pic.)

Hazel2019 @Megabooks @Hooked_on_books @Soscha I can‘t believe it‘s coming to this but I will have to bow out of the LMPBC this time. With working full time from home at this point and now long distance learning with my 7 year old it‘ll be very difficult for me to keep up. Sorry guys 😣 4y
Soscha Should we just postpone at this time? I‘m in a similar situation. 😕 4y
Megabooks I‘m having trouble concentrating on new books. I‘ve made some progress but not a lot. I‘d be okay with postponing. @Hazel2019 @Soscha @Hooked_on_books 4y
Hooked_on_books @Hazel2019 @Soscha @Megabooks I think we‘re all on the same page. I was thinking we may want to postpone. How about we touch base at the end of April to see how we want to go forward? 4y
Soscha I would be happy with that. 4y

Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB I‘ll be interested to see what you guys think of it. I thought it had a great, well-drawn setting but I didn‘t love parts of it. I‘ll keep the what to myself until after you‘ve read it! 🤭 4y

Here is Writers‘ Workshoppe and Imprint Books in Port Townsend, WA. They have a nicely curated shop, including a large poetry section, and a focus on writers. I picked up the tagged book as well as Wendell Berry‘s The Art of Loading Brush. #getindie

This book has been GREAT and I encourage anyone interested in feminism, Iceland, fishing (both commercial and subsistence), storytelling, oral history, salt cod or ancient sagas to read this. There are some dry parts but by and large it was a refreshing and fascinating read. #maggireads
