Headscarves and Hymens | Mona Eltahawy
53 posts | 37 read | 152 to read
Mona Eltahawy is an Egyptian woman who wrote an article for Foreign Policy entitled Why Do They Hate Us?; they being Muslim men, us being women. The piece sparked controversy, of course, making it clear that misogyny in the Arab world is something that engages and enrages the public. In Headscarves and Hymens, Eltahawy takes her argument further. Drawing on her years as a campaigner and a commentator on womens issues in the Middle East, she explains that, since the Arab Spring began, women in the Arab world have had two revolutions to undertake: one fought with men against oppressive regimes; and another fought against an entire political and economic system that treats women in countries from Yemen and Saudi Arabia to Egypt, Tunisia and Libya as second-class citizens. Eltahawy traveled across the Middle East and North Africa, meeting women and listening to their stories. Her book is a plea for outrage and action on their behalf; it confronts the toxic mix of culture and religion that few seem willing or able to disentangle lest they blaspheme or offend. A manifesto motivated by hope and fury in equal measure, Headscarves and Hymens is as illuminating as it is incendiary.

This book contains a lot of really important ideas. The author also gives a lot of context for the state of women's lives in many predominantly Muslim countries. And on a lighter note, she reads the #audiobook and has a really lovely accent.

This book is brutally honest about why it sucks to be a woman in Muslim majority countries. Eltahawy lays it all out there from emotional abuse to female genital mutilation. I appreciated every essay, every word. And because I could step away from the audiobook, take a break, read something lighter, I am reminded of my privilege. Excellent feminist read.

What a great book, very informative about many issues facing women especially in Muslim majority countries. Some things you will find are universal, like domestic abuse and victim blaming, other things like bans from playing sports or driving cars, as well as female genital mutilation were very nuisanced and topics I was less informed about.

GingerAntics FGM is actually shockingly common here in the United States. It‘s been used since the early 20th century as a way to curb female sexual drive, as well as stop little girls from touching themselves. Dr. Kellogg was a big part of the torture of small children, believing it was best to do it without anaesthesia. FGM in America has tripled since 1990 and, sadly, my state is one of the three hot spots for it in America. 3y

GingerAntics Eh, it happens. I just wish it didn‘t take up as much space in my head. I feel like if I could just stop thinking about it I‘d be okay. Some people are jerks who have no integrity, and sometimes you‘re related to them. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I‘m guessing this book is one of those books you have to be ready for or open for to be able to handle it, because I can just imagine where this book can go. 4y

Excellent book, very thought provoking. The author pulls no punches in describing the treatment of women in the Middle East and in condemning the governments that allow this and often enforce this, and in the failure of other nations to confront it. Essential intersectional feminist reading.

The book is well written and to the point and the author makes many statements more personal by describing her own experiences.

It's authors like her that really have me rethink my stance on the headscarf. I get more and more convinced that the headscarf and feminism doesn't go together. Keeping in mind that making women to cover is only one way to control them and there are many other things that need to change.

The sad and despicable truth is that women are not treated as equals. Not here, not anywhere. This writer explores this issue from Egypt. With frightening data that I think everyone should be aware of. Without truth and awareness there can be no change.

This was a difficult read. I am not too familiar with the revolution being lead in the Middle East and some of the stuff the author discusses is dark. She discusses child marriage, rape, cutting, assault, and all the ways women and girls are being beaten into silence. I wish we could all agree that most religions are problematic and when we let people interpret these scriptures in the ways that benefit only one side-it harms women.

Notafraidofwords If you liked the book bad feminist, you'll probably like this one. Give it a try! 7y

I think I need to sit with this book and process it. The Middle East is my home, and I was lucky enough to have a very privileged upbringing in a neutral country. I went to school, we have religious freedom for the most part, a large Indian community, I can drive- all of which sound very trivial- until you read a book like this and take a step back and examine your privileged bubble. Put this on your TBR stat.

I listened to this on audio and have to say, it doesn't make for easy listening. Not that it's meant to. I don't believe in shying away from awkward topics, but I do believe in self-care, and I did have to set this aside a few times to recover myself. Eltahawy is right on the money with this - why do we put religious tolerance before the human rights of millions of women? It's a heartbreaking book, but it's exactly what the world needs to hear.

cariashley I just finished this on audio today too. It's a lot to unpack and think about, I couldn't even muster a review. I'm really glad I read it though. 7y

Day 7 of #Booktober: #LitsyConfessions I borrowed this book from the library for so long that it's mine now. It was overdue and when I thought I was paying fines for some books I was accidentally paying the replacement fee for this book. If you haven't read this yet you should. It's worth the replacement fee! 😂

This can be a difficult listen at times, but the subject matter was never going to be easy listening! Eltahawy is unapologetic in her opinions, and repeatedly calls out the oppression of women in the name of religious observation and purity. Some of her opinions about religious veiling might make people uncomfortable, but it's an interesting perspective and I appreciate her no-nonsense stance on women's rights.

What to say about this book. The facts in it were deeply disturbing and I wanted to believe she has some angle some reason to exaggerate. I would walk away from it only to go right back. Rage and disbelief as I hear the reality of my sisters in the Middle East and know we still have so far to go here as well. This is a book worth reading even if reading it is hard.
