Stephen Kiernan's third novel is worth your reading energy. This is a well crafted book centered in the northern village of Vergers, France. The German Army has anticipated this sea town as a possible allied landing site. Emma, the village baker, keeps hope alive with bread and human kindness to her friends.

Historical fiction based on the first woman hired as an agent with Pinkerton Investigators. Hired in 1858, Kate Warne is credited with saving the life of Abraham Lincoln in Baltimore as he traveled by train for the inauguration. The author creates space for another adventure to follow the end of the Civil War.
Very engaging, well researched, and emotionally charged! Add this to your list

Shadows on the Lake: A Stefania Valenti Mystery | Giovanni Cocco, Amneris Magella

First book by this married couple from Italy. A captivating read with plot threads from WWII to present day. If you enjoy the historical frame of northern Italy and southern Switzerland, this is a fun read. Partisans, patriarchy, and a female Investigator.
(The translation is a bit rough in spots and produces a few weak transition plot points.)

Reads like a sacred hike in a National Park. Calms the day into perspective and reminds me why I could not wait until I finally became 62 years old---to get the lifelong membership to the National Parks for $10.

Reading a book with each young teen in our family is a joy. Chocolate comes with the package. If you read with children/grandchildren, try this series. Lina and Doon attempt to save the last city before the light go out on humanity. Well crafted characters and good creative imagery of proactive tasks to help people. Our teen has his copy, I have one too, and we discuss via text and together with M&Ms.

145 pages of excellent word crafting. My usual fast pace reading was s l o w e d to a gentle sway-so as to not miss a word. Threaded between 1924 and the present, this romance is 'Downton Abbey ish' and much more.
