Here‘s my review for this book I DNF‘d. I‘m counting this book for #bookspinbingo. I‘m glad I got it off of my list.
Here‘s my review for this book I DNF‘d. I‘m counting this book for #bookspinbingo. I‘m glad I got it off of my list.
I finally started this book while I finished coloring a picture on my iPad. So far, it‘s interesting. I like the narrator‘s voice but I felt like it was too slow so I sped it up from 1.00x to 1.25x and it‘s better. I don‘t feel like I‘m going to fall asleep listening to the narrator now but I don‘t feel like I‘m invested in the story yet.
I decided that I‘m going to read this book from my #bookspinbingo list next. I haven‘t started reading it yet. I need to start it soon though because the longest amount of time I have to read this book from Libby is 14 days. I need to find out if I‘m going to like this book or not. That way if I don‘t like it, I can DNF it and move on to something else. I wanted to start it last night but it was too late.

I wanted to love this book, but it just felt very flat in its storyline. Perhaps it was because I was listening to the audio version, which I do only here and there, but it just lacked the thrill I was expecting. Some points were exciting, and I enjoyed the different characters in Emmanuelle‘s village, but it just wasn‘t what I was hoping it would be!
What a beautiful book.
Happy to report we‘ve got our sky back.

No big deal, this is my view now. #blackholesun
I started this book and it hooks you right away but I paused and now feel unsure about the wisdom of immersing myself in a village where there is widespread deprivation and psychological gloom...too much, at this moment.
Maybe next week when the smoke clears! His writing is GOOOOOORGEOUS and so spare. Sharp.
This was a different story of WW2 for me. Set in a French village, it dealt with the troubles of ordinary people and how they endured. Very moving portrayal of the liberation and the sacrifices made by the Allied forces. Very good! 🤓
Relaxing after a long day of travel, sampled some fine craft beer here in VT
Beautiful Sunday! Relaxing with a book and some Red Zone football today 😊 🏈

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 Emma is a talented baker in a small village in France during the occupation. She discovers ways to help feed the people of her village and to resist and fight back against the enemy. Emma is plucky and brave but she doesn't believe the Allies will ever come and free them or that God still lives them. Then one day in June that all changes. A good WW11 read.
I would rank this between a pick and so-so. The first half of the book was wonderful and unique about Emma, a young baker in France in 1944 who bakes bread for the occupying troops and manages to also make bread to sustain her neighbors. Halfway through the book it started to feel like the same thing over and over. However, I kept reading because I really was invested in Emma and what happens to her.
Spending some time at a local coffee shop and trying to get some reading in today. Hope everyone is having a great Monday! 💜
Snowy Monday means having some extra time to start these two books. The Baker's Secret is for my Historican Fiction Book Club and it has been in my TBR pile for several months. Happy Monday!
Headed to see the WWll Museum in Normandy today... this has been a good read for this trip.
Knitting a sweater yoke in the heat, finished The Baker‘s Secret. An enjoyable fiction book focused on occupied France and the impending DDay.
Trying to beat the heat 🔥 so I am starting this one while sitting in the water.💦🤓
Picked up a few goodies today. Have you read any of these??
Kiernan does an admirable job fictionalizing a small French community in the lead-up to D-Day. Emma is forced to bake baguettes daily for German soldiers while becoming a silent resistor of Nazi occupation.
I finished the audiobook of The Baker's Secret by Stephen P. Kiernan on my morning commute. Talk about a #gutsyheroine ! The protagonist, Emmanuelle is a baker in a small French village during WW2, and the story follows her trying to keep her fellow villagers fed and alive during the German occupation of her town. I thought this book was beautifully written with strong characters and a powerful message. #bookrecommendations #gutsyheroines

Only twenty-two, Emma learned to bake w/Ezra at thirteen, she watched w/ shame & anger as her kind mentor was forced to wear the six-pointed yellow star on his clothing they pulled Ezra from his shop at gunpoint, the first of many villagers stolen away and never seen again. But in the years that her sleepy coastal village has suffered under the enemy, Emma has silently, stealthily fought back.
Setting is World War 2 Occupied France so you know it's going to be sad. I made sure not to read it before bed. Didn't want those visions in my head while trying to sleep. Emma is such a strong young woman. Smart and Resourceful. I would have liked an epilogue. Would have been nice to know the effects of her experience on rest of her life.
#TBRtemptation post 1! June 5, 1944, in a small Normandy village on the eve of D-Day, 22-year-old Emmanuelle is making the bread that's sustained her community. She learned baking secrets from her mentor, Ezra, who was taken away by the Nazis. She has been thwarting the occupiers' efforts through her baking, and has given the area something that'll make a difference, hope. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Today' Word: PURPOSEFUL
The Europeans during WWII needed to have determination and resolve to survive.
THE BAKER'S SECRET by Stephen P. Kieran is a tribute to the Europeans who endured and survived by their PURPOSEFUL actions.
THE BAKER'S SECRET is a favorite book for me for 2017.

Home today, work tonight. The crazy hours science puts you through. Tomorrow 6am to 10 pm 😕 so trying to get some good reading time in now.
LOVED this book. My comments are this: If you read only ONE book this year, make it this one. Full review at this link on my blog: https://silversolara.blogspot.com/2017/05/the-bakers-secret-by-stephen-p-kiernan...
What an amazing book. This is one of those books that makes me want to meet the author and say thank you. The main character is a fully formed human being - she has flaws, she has hope, she despairs... Such a lovely thing, this book.
I'm so glad I read Last Hope Island just before this book. I have a much, much deeper understanding of the occupation of France and the relationship between the Resistance and the Allies.
Picked this up at the Goodwill store for $1.87!!
These are a few of my zinnias 🌸💕
This book was beautiful and heart breaking and hopeful and just lovely. Kieran did an amazing job bringing the story of Emmanuel and her village during the Nazi occupation of France to life. Another great WWII era read. My reading buddies were right long side me as I finished this one up today.
How fitting is this quote to remind me of why our country and our people are so amazing! Happy Birthday, America! #stillproudtobeanamerican
So this pretty much explains my week that still has one more day to go. I've replaced my #bookandacuppa with a #bookandapint -uh. 😂. I may or may not eat the whole pint. Most likely not, but you really never know until you get in there. Ya know what I mean, Verne?
