The Invisible Library
The Invisible Library | Genevieve Cogman
The first in a gripping, adventurous series, The Invisible Library is the astounding debut from Genevieve Cogman. Irene must be at the top of her game or she'll be off the case - permanently. . . Irene is a professional spy for the mysterious Library, which harvests fiction from different realities. And along with her enigmatic assistant Kai, she's posted to an alternative London. Their mission - to retrieve a dangerous book. But when they arrive, it's already been stolen. London's underground factions seem prepared to fight to the very death to find her book. Adding to the jeopardy, this world is chaos-infested - the laws of nature bent to allow supernatural creatures and unpredictable magic. Irene's new assistant is also hiding secrets of his own. Soon, she's up to her eyebrows in a heady mix of danger, clues and secret societies. Yet failure is not an option - the nature of reality itself is at stake. The Invisible Library is followed by the second title in The Invisible Library series, The Masked City.

I read this book back in 2016 and I remember really loving it but I didn‘t continue this series. I decided to give it a reread and didn‘t remember a single thing! So, it was like reading a new book. And I am actually going to continue the series this time!

Really wanted to love it, but was ultimately pretty disappointed 😔

Just too much stuff jammed in (vampire, fae, dragons, cyber insects, detectives, secret societies, etc) and not nearly enough world building.
Action was clunky.

I was really hoping for more… but I guess you can‘t win them all 🤷🏻‍♀️

Picked up recently looking for books my dad and I used to enjoy when I was a kid. Hopefully a new series to follow. He was super into Wheel of Time but I‘m not ready for such a long adventure yet, lol.

This was a reread. #SeriesLove2023 @TheSpineView @Andrew65

A journeyman librarian is not only sent off on an undercover mission to retrieve a certain book about fairytales without a proper briefing or any preparations, she also has to take along her brand new apprentice. What could possibly go wrong?

Definitely want to know how the story continues and how things are tied to each other.

I chose this for #booked2023 #gaslightfantasy, since it was on my TBR shelf already. 🙂

I‘d say it also falls into urban fantasy, taking place in Londons (yes multiple) and having the typical UF cast (vampires/fay/werewolves/etc) and also somewhat steampunky.

For me, more so-so but almost low pick? Fun but won‘t stick with me at all.

This was a delightful romp through alternate worlds, following librarians with powers who are acting on orders from a mysterious Library. The world-building felt a little scattered, but the characters and plot were so much fun, and I‘m looking forward to the next one! I suppose this counts for #SeriesLove2023… even if this is the start of a new series and I intended to use the challenge to finish series already in progress! 😆

Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 Always good to start new series. 2y

I was sitting here deciding which book to start tonight, opened up my eBook of The Invisible Library, saw this blurb from N.K. Jemisin, and poof! My decision is made. I mean, remote-controlled alligators? 🤯😂🙌🏼 If I‘d known that before, this book might not have sat on my Kindle unread for this long.

Hell's Library meets Veronica Speedwell. Once upon a time I avoided series like the plague and now I am over the moon realizing there are seven more books in this world to read. The librarian with powers and the book hunting/mysteries/heists and the sharp detective and the apprentice who's more than he seems and the rival and the hinted character back stories. Oh, yes, please! My kind of fantasy. Bit predictable? Yes, but it makes me feel smart!

Oo, oo! New word! I've seen insidious many a time, but I can't recall an invidious:
"(of an action or situation) likely to arouse or incur resentment or anger in others."
"(of a comparison or distinction) unfairly discriminating; unjust."
Borders on an onomatopoeia - sounds like you're expressing distaste just pronouncing it. IN-vidi-ous! ?

The in between between worlds, held in existence by virtue of the books housed there. The Invisible Library functions to ‘collect and preserve‘ unique and important works of literature connecting it to the existing alternate worlds. In this first book, a young librarian and her student find themselves entrenched in a generations old vendetta. They must trust each other and unlikely friends if they want to save themselves and the Library‘s secrets.

I was referred to this collection as being the closest thing to Harry Potter and thought I'd buy the first book to see and give them a go... I have since bought the 2nd and 3rd in the collection. I don't think that any book should and can be compared to Harry Potter though. I did enjoy the world that she creates... Simple to follow and interesting with lots of room to test your imagination. I'm looking forward to the rest!

#unpopularopinion 3⭐️
This was a tough one. I really wanted to like it but right out of the gate the relationships between the characters ruined it for me. It wasn‘t even instant chemistry or love at first sight but this internal struggle with wanting to trust someone from the moment you meet… just strange and inappropriate. This book was very difficult to get into. Once an antagonist was named it was a bit easier to get swept up into the story ⬇️

Read-y_Picker There was a lot of ‘rule breaking‘ as the MC explained the workings of the storyverse to the reader by revealing the library‘s secrets to civilians. I will probably pick up the next in the series to see if the writing improves now that the basics are out of the way, but I don‘t have high hopes. 3y

I was so excited to try this series and it did not disappoint. I love the concept of the universe created and this reminded me of the Parasol Protectorate meets Chronicles of St. Mary‘s, both of which I love!

The characters were quite fun and unique. The characters that were trope characters weren‘t taken too seriously which I appreciated. The protagonist had some delightful inner thoughts and asides, which is always great.

No, sorry. I hate giving up on books, especially ones that sound right up my alley. Librarian thieves stealing books from alternate dimensions? Brilliant concept. But the characters are so flat and whiney, the action scenes are interrupted by unneeded exposition and the story begins to drag early on.

I really wanted to get into this one, but it just lost me too early and my tbr is calling.

It took me a while to soak up this book, but I'm glad I took my time! Great action, fantastic characters, and what a world they're in! I found the heroine pretty darn relatable. What an incredible adventure. Would definitely re-read. It looks like it's the first in a series, I'll have to find the second book someday!

katy4peas There is so much going on and you are just thrown into a new world with new vocab and everything that it definitely took me a little while to get into the groove with this one as well. But I loved it once I figured out what was going on. I did guess part of the ending though! 4y

Thoroughly enjoyable, a delight to read and a pleasure to see into the mind of Genevieve Cogman. The premise is intruiging, the plot is fast paced and the characters are very dynamic. It can be hard to keep up with at times, but this isn't a book for someone looking for a light read. It sucks you in from the first chapter and even though it finishes abruptly, I look forward to reading the other books in the series.

Started on New Year‘s Day, finally finished today. Let‘s hope my next read doesn‘t take as long.

Giving it a “pick” rating because I just can‘t remember the beginning well enough to truly judge it as a whole. It seemed to constantly break its own rules, but, again, that might be explained in the opening half. The climax was fun.
