It‘s amazing what people create using their pain. Work that is touched by melancholy has its own unique beauty. Even the word ‘melancholy‘ is pretty, the way it rolls on your tongue. I think sadness adds something to literature that is unique. It‘s an ingredient like . . .” I thought for a moment. “Like salt. Salt has that power to completely transform a dish. I think sadness has that same transformative effect in literature.

never tell yourself
that because love can conquer all
it has earned the right to reduce
china plates into confetti shards
or shake a house into rubble

do not excuse the smell of smoke,
saying to yourself that some loves
simply burn so bright that every word
cannot help bur spit sparks
darling, recognize an inferno
when you see one
then run like hell

Good things don‘t wait until you‘re ready. Sometimes they come right before, when you‘re almost there. And I figured when that happens, you can let them pass by like a bus not meant for you. Or you can get ready. So I got ready.

You won‘t understand what I mean now, but someday you will: the only trick of friendship, I think, is to find people who are better than you are—not smarter, not cooler, but kinder, and more generous, and more forgiving—and then to appreciate them for what they can teach you, and to try to listen to them when they tell you something about yourself, no matter how bad—or good—it might be, and to trust them, which is the hardest thing of all.
