Pickpick

An examination of how racism leads to self-hatred, the loss of innocence, abandonment, misplaced aggression, and so many other devastating impacts. I read this for #BannedBooksWeek My first Toni Morrison book, but it won't be my last.

I've read 100 pages, and I have another 300 to go, but I'm not into this book enough to care what happens. I don't quit books often, but this is a "did not finish" for me.
Plus, what's up with the lack of quotation marks? Annoying.

If you are a reader of historical fiction, I highly recommend this book.
The story is told from four different characters' perspectives, young voices from nations that are all directly impacted by WWII. I particularly appreciated the connection to Lina from Between Shades of Gray. My heart swells with emotion and my eyes swell with tears thinking about the atrocities of war and the innocent casualties.

A gun-slinging, bounty-hunting dwarf, a son-of-a-slave who needs to avoid the drink, a wild pig, a prostitute, and a sometimes Sheriff join forces with a God-fearing teen to save his kidnapped sister and avenge his Grandpa's death in turn-of-the-century TX. Not for the faint at heart. I loved it!

The Cartel | Don Winslow

Did you watch The Sorpranos? Did you read The Godfather? What they are to the mafia is what this book and its predecessor (The Power of the Dog) are to Mexican drug cartels.

"...a gripping true-to-life epic, ripped from the headlines, of power, corruption, revenge and justice spanning the past decade of the Mexican-American drug wars." Reading now!

Is this fan fiction? The parallels to the well-known character and stories of Dexter Morgan were too much for me to take. There are A LOT. Sure, there are differences too but not enough to feel like an original story to me.

Extreme Prey | John Sandford

I am a Lucas Davenport fan girl from the beginning. This plot, including crazies targeting a potential presidential candidate, was particularly strong.

Kittykittylala Oh I loved The Murderer's Daughter! I'll have to check this one out 😊 8y
texerin @Kittykittylala This one is part of a series, but so far, I'd recommend it as a standalone as well. 8y
