Blood-Drenched Beard
Blood-Drenched Beard: A Novel | Daniel Galera
9 posts | 3 read | 8 to read
From Brazils most acclaimed young novelist, the mesmerizing story of how a troubled young mans restorative journey to the seaside becomes a violent struggle with his familys past So why did they kill him? Im getting there. Patience, tch. I wanted to give you the context. Because its a good story, isnt it? A young mans father, close to death, reveals to his son the true story of his grandfathers death, or at least the truth as he knows it. The mean old gaucho was murdered by some fellow villagers in Garopaba, a sleepy town on the Atlantic now famous for its surfing and fishing. It was almost an execution, vigilante style. Or so the story goes. It is almost as if his father has given the young man a deathbed challenge. He has no strong ties to home, he is ready for a change, and he loves the seaside and is a great ocean swimmer, so he strikes out for Garopaba, without even being quite sure why. He finds an apartment by the water and builds a simple new life, taking his fathers old dog as a companion. He swims in the sea every day, makes a few friends, enters into a relationship, begins to make inquiries. But information doesnt come easily. A rare neurological condition means that he doesnt recognize the faces of people hes met, leading frequently to awkwardness and occasionally to hostility. And the people who know about his grandfather seem fearful, even haunted. Life becomes complicated in Garopaba until it becomes downright dangerous. Steeped in a very special atmosphere, both languid and tense, and soaked in the sultry allure of south Brazil, Daniel Galeras masterfully spare and powerful prose unfolds a story of discovery that feels almost archetypala display of storytelling sorcery that builds with oceanic force and announces one of Brazils greatest young writers to the English-speaking world. From the Hardcover edition.

This is the publishing house I interned at last semester - I was really happy to help them out today for World Book Day! My first experience selling books :) I loved it - how many of you Littens work/have worked in a bookstore? 🙋🙋🙋

LibrarianJen Im not allowed to work in a bookstore. My paychecks would just go right back to the store. At least at the library everything was free! 6y
BookishTrish I have! 6y
readordierachel I've worked in 2 different used bookstores. One was my first job as a teenager. 6y

ephemeralwaltz @BookishTrish @ReadOrDieRachel @vivastory very cool! Were they pleasant experiences? 6y
vivastory It was enjoyable, if underpaid. My meager paychecks always seemed to go directly back to them, as I seemed to spend it all on books 😂 6y
ephemeralwaltz @vivastory *it's a trap* 6y
vivastory It really is. Indentured servitude for bookworms. 6y
readordierachel My experience was much the same as @vivastory Quite fun but all my money went to books. I cannot resist a discounted book to save my life! 6y

Super belated thank you to @Rachel.Rencher for her generous and fun moving giveaway! I am so excited to get into these reads that are outside of my normal! Not pictured are the adorable tiny whales and the card they arrived in, a box of chocolates (already eaten), and a journal (which I do not plan to eat). Also, you can‘t see it in the picture but we are getting an Easter snow in the Midwest today! April fools from spring I guess!

MicheleinPhilly That snow is headed our way overnight. It‘s 62 degrees right now. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 6y
ElyssaReads @MicheleinPhilly we had a gorgeous day yesterday - sounds like you are just a day behind us! Hope the snow doesn‘t cause you any trouble! ❄️ 6y
MicheleinPhilly I have the day off tomorrow so it can snow all it wants as far as I‘m concerned! 💃🏻 6y
Rachel.Rencher Already eaten 😂😂 I'm so glad you liked everything! Enjoy and hopefully some weather comes your way soon! 😁❤ 6y

Great novel by a talented young Brazilian author. It's set in Garopaba, a city in the south of Brazil by the beach. Despite the title, it's a poetic book beautifully written. #Sha2017 #BrazilianLiterature

This Brazilian book, translated to English as "Blood-Drenched Beard", is about a young man who moves to a coastal town in the south of Brazil to start a simple new life, and maybe try to find out the truth about his grandfather's death.

Despite its off-putting title, the story is beautifully written and incredibly atmospheric – I could almost hear and smell the salty ocean as I read it.

With a script that is both controlled and sensitive, this book speaks of lost loves, family conflicts and unconfessed secrets. I just love that story takes place in the south of Brazil. I've read 100 pages, and I have another 300 to go, but I'm not into this book enough to care what happens. I don't quit books often, but this is a "did not finish" for me.
Plus, what's up with the lack of quotation marks? Annoying.
