A remote and affluent Maine community, Corpus Christi was untouched by the environmental catastrophe that destroyed the neighboring blue-collar town of Bedford. But all that will change in a heartbeat . . . The nightmare is awakened when third-grade schoolteacher Lois Larkin takes the children on a field trip to Bedford. There in the abandoned woods, a small, cruel boy unearths an ancient horrora contagious plague that transforms its victims into something violent, hungry . . . and inhuman. The long, dark night is just beginning. And all hope must die as the contagion feedsfor the malevolence will not rest until it has devoured every living soul in Corpus Christi . . . and beyond.

This book was published in 2007. I wonder how many books in the future will reference the Covid-19 pandemic.

BarbaraTheBibliophage I have been wondering the same. And TV and movies. All these shows that are set in “present day” are going to have to figure out what to do about quarantine months. 4y
Bookzombie @BarbaraTheBibliophage I have been thinking about that too! Do they just pretend they‘re in some alternate present day time line and not address it? That will seem strange for some shows. 4y
Reggie I like how Michael‘s just peeking out at us. There has to be a couple of Coronavirus novels in the pipeline. Probably a couple of anthologies of short stories. 4y

Bookzombie @Reggie You are probably right. I imagine in a few years I will be reading a non-fiction one by Richard Preston too. 4y
Reggie Hi Margie! Hope you and PapaBear are doing well. I‘m halfway through the tagged book. And I think it‘s totally your type of book. Richard Preston even blurbs it. I almost stopped at 20 pages because my pandemic anxiety almost took over. But I‘m halfway through it and it‘s about a pandemic called the Kongoli virus. It almost feels like a diary of what we‘ve been going through. So anyways just if you‘re curious and you see it at the library pick it 4y
Reggie up because it‘s fascinating. 4y
Bookzombie @Reggie Hi Reggie! We are going okay here. I saw this book in a NPR review and I have the e-book on hold at the library. I'm wondering how I will feel about it. The Missing was a little close to home, but I really liked it. I do love a book with a virus, lol. How are you? I hope you are well too. 4y
Reggie @Bookzombie My quarantine induced reading coma is over. And my reading has only accelerated since I took my laptop into the shop last week. You don‘t know how much time that takes up until it‘s gone, lol. Other than that, doing ok. Just waiting for the ok from our governor for our workplace to open back up. Other than that pretty good. 4y
Bookzombie @Reggie I‘m happy your reading coma is over! I would get so much more reading done if I didn‘t have a laptop! 😁 It‘s good to hear you are okay/pretty good, my friend. For some reason, I thought you had already returned to work. I hope that when your workplace opens back up it is safe and not stressful. 💗 4y

A very interesting book. I really enjoyed it to be honest.
A child goes missing in the woods. Then something more terrifying creeps out of the woods and the whole town of Corpus Christi is plunged into tragedy and United in shock

JoScho Sounds good and creepy! Stacked 🖤 5y

Pickpick

This is probably the most Stephen Kingsian novel I have ever read that wasn‘t written by Stephen King. Unknowingly, I read this book 2 before reading book 1 but I think it‘s fine as a stand-alone. A nearby town has an environmental disaster that makes an ancient evil strong enough to be awoken by the neighboring town. I enjoyed this as Sarah‘s specialty was introducing all these families and townspeople in crises who I would have loved to 👇🏼

Reggie Have known if down the road they had solved their problems but can‘t because there is an apocalypse happening. So instead there is this heavy feeling of loss and regret. Pick!!!! 6y
batsy "Stephen Kingsian" needs to become a thing! 6y
Reggie @batsy She even sets the book in Maine!!! 6y
RohitSawant You know I'm stacking this. 😆 6y

#FierceFeb Meet Jean Rizzo, the star of unlucky Chapter 13. I‘m 100 pages further than this but so far she only appears on pages 159-173. I feel like Sarah is a sadist for putting her in here because here is someone who has always felt like #nooneslittlegirl. She had a horrible day as always trying to fit in at school, where she eats her fluffernutter sandwiches in a stall in a restroom while picking spitballs out of her hair. And always 👇🏼

Reggie In the back of her mind is her dad telling her what a loser she is. As she walks home after destroying her bike, a car stops to give her a ride when she realizes it‘s her dad, driving around drunk. As she reaches for the door he speeds off leaving her to walk miles. As she shortcuts through the woods she meets her demise as, ironically, all the cool kids who were missing today at school because they have been turned into a demonic feral pack 👇🏼 (edited) 6y
Reggie Surround her and then eat her. It was a punch to the gut and just so depressing at work during lunch last night reading this. Jesus, Sarah Langan!!!! 6y
batsy Oh my god 😟 Poor Jean! 6y

batsy Polyester Bride seems to have been a rough one for many 😅 6y
Cathythoughts Poor child 😢. So much going on inside her 6y
Suet624 I think I‘ll skip this book. 🤔🤔🤔 6y
Centique 😳😳😳 OMG Reggie. You need a big dose of puppies and kittens after reading that! 🐶🐹🐭🐰 6y
Reggie @Cathythoughts there was a lot of people angst in this one. @Suet624 maybe save a space on your Halloween/October dance/read card for this one. @Centique It‘s off to killer mermaids in Into the Drowning Deeep for me with my Horror book exchange coming up. Maybe there‘ll be solace there. Lol 6y
Centique @Reggie you make me snort laugh!🧜‍♀️🧜‍♂️🗡⚔️ killer mermaids sounds like something I could get behind, but my scary range only goes from Casper to Coraline. Look forward to your review! 6y
