Pickpick

I did this a lot while listening to this. This was a difficult read, based on subject matter alone. It was, however, interesting to hear about all the information I didn't know about from Kinsey's views on bestiality and homosexuality to eugenics on many levels to Hobbes take all you can get to Hitler's views about religious deities. It was all cringeworthy, mind you. DO NOT listen out loud with kids around! Made that mistake once... lol

IamIamIam Another tip: it's helpful to be familiar with the philosophies of Marx, Lenin, Nietzsche, Hobbes, Machiavelli and Freud. It's a clinical book so the names are tossed around casually and I did have a bit of difficulty keeping up. 7y
[DELETED] 3803335244 Currently, I‘m teaching my 2 high-schoolers about WWII. They are in shock of Hitler, Stalin, & Mussolini‘s views. So sad that there was ever a time people thought like that, let alone people followed those ideals. And even today some people still feel that way. I imagine this book was very cringe worthy. 😬 7y
IamIamIam @ForeverNerdy I don't want to misquote the author, but he mentioned something about a bad idea being disseminated as pseudo science as being one of the most dangerous things. It was a really interesting summary of things I had only inklings of and some I had no idea. You may find some material useful for sol 7y
IamIamIam @ForeverNerdy School... I wasn't typing that out again because of fat fingers. It's amazing how the herd can blindly follow along in the illusion of a better world. A lot of these philosophies started out with the idea of making things better by eliminating problems. Unfortunately, those "problems" tended to be people rather than poverty. 7y

So here's a thing... Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood was all for distribution of the birth control pill to.... *wait for it*
Prevent the feeble minded, persons of an IQ lower than 75, also dubbed the "idiot, moron and imbecile", from procreating.
Folks, Planned Parenthood was founded by a hardcore eugenicist. ???????

ofbooksandme Luckily (sometimes, like in this case) organizations do their own thing and time helps. 7y
IamIamIam @ofbooksandme I absolutely agree that the organization is amazing and has progressed far from the original intention but I was absolutely shocked to hear this!!! 7y
mcipher Oh, wow! I had no idea. 7y

ofbooksandme @IamIamIam Yeah, it's a repulsive idea. It also gives me some faith in humanity back. Karma, it works hahaha 7y
IamIamIam @mcipher Crazy, right?? 7y
IamIamIam @ofbooksandme Not as an excuse, but eugenics was a big movement through the 30s and then Hitler, of course, took it to the extreme. It's a very odd concept, especially in a society that is aware and now helping people with mental disabilities and deficits. It's foreign to me to think that people really had "good" intentions at the time. 7y
ofbooksandme Yeah, totally, it's not an excuse because in every historical moment there are people who go against the "common sense", but context explains the fact that she was not just a crazy woman, she was just somebody from her own time. 7y
teebe 😦Wow. I‘ve never heard that before. But also eugenicists were super messed up even in their own time.. context doesn‘t really change anything there. I‘m glad the organization moved well beyond that but it makes me really concerned about what their early operation style was. (edited) 7y

This book is making my main squeeze Hobbes look pretty crappy... anyone got the Cliff's Notes for Leviathan? Sounds like a thrill a minute... and something I'd immediately regret.
