Navel Gazing: True Tales of Bodies, Mostly Mine (but also my mom's, which I know sounds weird) | Michael Ian Black
11 posts | 18 read | 29 to read
New York Times bestselling author and stand-up comedian Michael Ian Black delivers a frank and funny memoir about confronting his genetic legacy as he hits his forties.Whether its family history, religion, aging, or his parents, Michael Ian Black always has something to say in the dry, irreverent voice that has captured a fan base of millions. When a medical diagnosis forces him to realize hes not getting any younger, he reexamines his life as a middle-aged guyof course, in the deadpan wit and self-deprecating vignettes that have become trademarks of his humor. The alt-comedy take on getting older, Navel Gazing is a funny-because-its-true memoir about looking around when youre forty and realizing that life is about more than receding hairlines and proving ones manliness on Twitterits about laughing at yourself.

I‘ve been a huge fan of MIB since his VH1 “I Love the XXs” days. He is so funny while being so eloquent. His “How to be Amazing” podcast is a great example of how he can be incredibly thoughtful and sincere while also making you laugh. This book is excellently paced, exploring some stories all throughout his (and his mother‘s) life. It is very well-written and absolutely worth a read.

Zelma Ooh, that you for the podcast red! I adore him. (His recent role on The Jim Gaffigan show is quite good.) 6y
StephanieSays @Zelma definitely check it out! I especially enjoyed the episode with Alexis Ohanian. I also love The Jim Gaffigan Show! 6y
Zelma @StephanieSays yay, another Gaffigan fan! I feel like a third of Mr. Z‘s and my dialogue is just JG jokes. 😂 6y

First book I both started AND finished in 2018—and based on its strength alone, I think I‘m off to a good start on a promising reading year! 💙

Here's a glimpse into the tippy top of my HUGE TBR pile. It is constantly evolving depending on the mood that strikes me, the buzz I see about a book, or just what I have on hand. I know many Littens can relate. Anyone read any of these? #tbrtuesday

Aswenson I loved both All the Ugly and Wonderful Things and (edited) 7y
christineandbooks Thanks Is How It Always Is has 🐝 one of my favorite reads this year... wonderful. Also Talking As Fast As I Can was fantastic... even better if you can listen to the audio also. Lauren Graham narrates. 7y
Purrfectpages Good to know @Aswenson! The Woman In Cabin 10 definitely will get read as it is my book club's June pick! 7y

christineandbooks Oh good! And sorry for the weird typos in my post... I obviously didn't look at it before hitting send! 😀 7y
Purrfectpages @christineandbooks no worries! I'm forever editing my posts and comments. Sometimes I even manage to hit enter before I'm done! Lol 7y
Onlaughterandliteracy Furiously Happy is laugh out loud funny! But I could have done without the woman in cabin 10...the ending wasn't satisfying for me. 7y
Ashley_Nicoletto I lovedddd furiously happy, but a lot of these are sitting on my TBR as well. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ 7y
Purrfectpages Two votes in a row for Furiously Happy @Ashley_Nicoletto @Onlaughterandliteracy. It's another audio book I've got on hold! 7y
Purrfectpages @Onlaughterandliteracy I have heard some mixed things about Woman In Cabin 10. :( 7y
Onlaughterandliteracy @Purrfectpages it's excellent on audio!! 7y
KathyWheeler Furiously Happy is good -- I listened to it. 7y
silentrequiem I haven't read any of these but several are also on my TBR mountain... 😶 7y

I just finished listening to this audio book written and read by Micheal Ian Black. It was pretty good, honest and heartfelt but also laugh out loud funny!😀⭐️👍

Heatheringheights I was cracking up at this book, too! 🤣 8y
Zelma ? I'm such a dork. Without looking at the title or reading your blurb, I thought to myself, "wow, that bookstore clerk looks kind of like Michael Ian Black." ?? (edited) 8y

Mehso-so

This was amusing enough to finish but not fantastic enough to recommend. It started out strong and then turned self-indulgent, and petty.

Spiderfelt I'm working on reviewing the last of my 2016 books for the bell rings tomorrow. 8y

Fittingly enough, finished this on Mother's Day. I'm a big fan of MIB, so for me, this was comfort food. This one took awhile to warm up to--however, Black's honest look at his relationship with his ailing mother as well as facing his own mortality managed to be both funny and heartbreaking.

Calling this a deftly woven tapestry of kinship, morbidity, sarcasm, and humor might make Michael Ian Black squirm-- mostly the "deftly woven tapestry" part-- but Navel Gazing is funny-because-it's-sad-and-true at its best. He tells it like it is.
