Tooth and Nail | Ian Rankin

Scottish homicide detective John Rebus has been sent from "North of the Border" to help London police catch a serial killer with a gruesome M.O. Teamed with a London cop he wants to trust but can't, Rebus lets a beautiful psychologist into the case develops a bizarre portrait of a killer who leaves bite marks and tears on each victim's body. Now it's only a question of who is going to get busted first: the cop with the accent who breaks all the rules--or the psycho painting London with blood... The New York Times calls Ian Rankin's Inspector Rebus books "A superior series," and Tooth and Nail is another outstanding entry.

I love the writing , the story , the crime. Set in London , usually set in Edinburgh & the MC is Rebus. I havnt been so taken with a crime series sinse Wallander. It‘s believable , it‘s grounded, there‘s real talk & places going on. I‘m excited to find a series of this quality, top class. Thrilled to have given it a go , Thankyou Litten friends for your reviews on this series. I‘ve the next one ready to go ..... and the next one ! Obsessed

Bit strange reading about Rebus in London and I was a bit hesitant at first. But turns into a good serial killer chase.
Some of the language felt a bit dated, but overall loving the series so far.

BarbaraBB I enjoyed these series too but didn‘t read them all. 4y
MicheleinPhilly I stopped after 2. I‘m not sure why. 4y

This is the 3rd book in the Inspector Rebus series, and it was awesome! It got back to the type of mystery represented in the 1st book of the series, and was so much better than the 2nd book. Again, there are many flawed characters and the London police have strong feelings about Scotland. Our “hero” being from Edinburgh, this adds to the difficulties surrounding the solving of this case. It had me guessing right up to the end. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

MicheleinPhilly Good to know! I loved the first and was “meh” on the second so I abandoned the series. 5y
rabbitprincess Hurray! This is one of the books I recommend that people start with if they want to try Rebus; the series has hit its stride by this point and it's the debut of Big Ger Cafferty 🙂 Of course, I will gleefully read series out of order 😉 5y
Suelizbeth @MicheleinPhilly glad I could enable you to continue! 😻 5y
Suelizbeth @rabbitprincess I can see your point, but I am an inveterate read-a-series-in-order kind of gal! 😹 5y

Rebus is away from his customary patch of Edinburgh and working a serial killer case in London. Fortunately, the trip south does nothing to soften his natural abrasiveness and he is soon ruffling feathers among his new colleagues in the Met. Rankin went on to write much better novels than this one, but there is a special pleasure in seeing the growth of a well-loved character and the last fifty pages or so fairly rattle along.

andrew61 Are you reading first time in order, in which case i am very jealous as i read them over a 20 year period from 1997. I am however about four behind from when rebus retired so maybe i will resume soon. Im just annoyed that at some point i put all my old copies into charity. Hope you continue to enjoy with a glass of whisky, a bread roll, stolen bottle of milk and rory gallagher or similar on the turntable. 6y
Minervasbutler @andrew61 I read 2 or 3 at random a few years back and decided they deserved the proper respect. Thank you! 6y

Mehso-so

This is the third in the Inspector Rebus series, a series which I like to read in between all other books. I didn't like this installment much though. It was no real pageturner and I don't like it when I couldn't have guessed the murderer.

It just has to be the Wolfman persona from the Ian Rankin book Tooth and Nail as my choice for #wolves #junetunz He is called Wolfman because he takes a bite out of his victims, and because the first victim was found in Wolf Street in the East End of London. This is one of my favourite Rebus books, hilarious at points with Rebus helping out in London. This has also been published as Wolfman. A great end scene to the book! Thoroughly recommend.

andrew61 I forgot about rebus's trip to London ,great choice. 7y
Andrew65 @andrew61 Thanks. The clash of cultures between Rebus and London are great in this one - gave me so many laughs. You know a book is great when you could easily pick it up and read it again. Ian Rankin has such a wonderful literary style too, almost as if the words cuddle up to you. (edited) 7y
andrew61 Yes many an evening I've fancied sitting in an armchair staring into the darkness, a bottle of whisky at my side and a record player with my favourite album playing. I read dead mans shoes last year so may catch up soon. He is brilliant. 7y

Andrew65 @andrew61 I'm up to book 13, Resurrection Men, which I read in April. Still 8 to go in the series so far - like to ration them so always got plenty to look forward to. 7y
Cinfhen Just enjoying the thread between the Andrews @andrew61 @Andrew65 🙌🏻I've never read Rankin before...but it's a name I'm beginning to recognize through Litsy 😊 7y
Andrew65 @Cinfhen It is one of my favourite crime series, and I always like books set in Edinburgh. Ian Rankin does a great job in these books and like his occasional link up with the local hood , Morris Gerald "Big Ger" Cafferty. He is rather a unique detective and is often in trouble with his bosses. The first book in the series gives a good introduction to him whilst having a good serial killer plot 7y
