The Boys of Summer
The Boys of Summer | Richard Cox

Both a haunting coming-of-age story set in North Texas against the backdrop of a deadly tornado, and a character-driven, deeply-affecting supernatural thriller. In 1979, a massive tornado devastates the city of Wichita Falls, Texas, leaving scores dead, thousands homeless, and nine-year-old Todd Willis in a coma, fighting for his life. Four years later, Todd awakens to a world that looks the same but feels different in a way he can't quite grasp. For Todd, it's a struggle to separate fact from fiction as he battles lingering hallucinations from his long sleep. The new friends Todd makes in 1983 are fascinated with his experience and become mesmerized by his strange relationship with the world. Together the five boys come of age during a dark, fiery summer where they find first love, betrayal, and a secret so terrible they agree to never speak of it again. But darkness returns to Wichita Falls twenty-five years later, and the boys--now men--are forced to reunite and confront the wounds from their past. When their memories of that childhood summer refuse to align with reality, the friends embark upon a search for truth that will threaten their lives, and transform their understanding of each other--and the world itself--forever.

Each of the characters in the beginning of this book are probably praying to God to #gimmeshelter because there‘s a tornado and not everyone has made it home in time. It‘s a very intense and horrifying start and not everyone makes it. #MayMovieMagic

Finished chapter 12. I‘ve never been in a physical altercation. I either stayed away from trouble or was deft and clever enough to get out of it. Making friends through fisticuffs is alien to me, but the action at the end of chapter 12 is easy to follow. Easier to identify with is when Todd has trouble convincing himself to just go outside. I‘ve been there a number of times. Richard Cox packs a lot of emotion into a small space.

In honor of the release of the new IT trailer...I'm almost done with and absolutely loving (might have taken it to work today 😬) The Boys of Summer. It was sold to me as a combo of IT and Stranger Things (I'll throw a little Stand by Me in there). So true, but it's also totally it's own. ❤️👍🏻

I don't know why, but this was a chore to read. It didn't pick up until the last 3rd of the book, but even by then, I was checked out of the book. I really wanted to like this one too, but maybe it is timing or something, but it was just too long.

It seems like I have been reading this forever and I am finally getting into the good stuff on page 284 of 585! I have almost quit this twice, but I keep coming back to it. A tornado knocks out one boy, who can sort of see the future. 5 boys form a club, set fire to some buildings, and now 20 years later someone is seeking revenge. Is it one of their friends? Did someone prophesy this? Why is it almost 600 pages!?!

DanaKristine Oh Dear Lord! I don't think I'll tackle this one! Lol 8y

A great easy read. Made me think of Stephen King and Robert McCammon. And people in that kind of company can't be bad right? A tale of five men whose story is told weaving their present with their childhood. Not so much scary as suspenseful with a dash of creep and bizarre. Also makes you think about the moments in childhood that define you as an adult. Makes me want to go watch Stand By Me, Silver Bullet, and Twilight Zone: The Movie.
