I am moving. Again. I have been in my current rent-stabilized apartment only since Feb 2018, but it turned out to be a sh*thole--persistent pest problems and water damage in the kitchen wall with the paint bubbling and festering for 5 months. The management company only fixed it after I filed a complaint with the city. But, I won a housing lottery and am moving to a rent-stabilized unit in a brand new luxury building next week! #GimmeShelter

Liz_M The tagged book is relevant because I was reading it at the same time I was looking at the new apartment and the novel opens with the main character viewing/moving into a rented room. 6y
Theaelizabet Congratulations on your new digs! 6y
BarbaraBB Moving again, That‘s quite a challenge. But the good thing is that you can arrange your books again 😉. Wishing you lots of happy times in the new place 💚🍀 6y

Liz_M @RidgewayGirl It could be much worse -- I'm only moving two miles; not between two countries. 😁 6y
Liz_M @BarbaraBB Yes, moving IN, finding the exact whatsit for the new space, and getting everything arranged will be fun. I do realize I owe you a pic of my nyrb shelves when they are unpacked. 😁 6y

This is written to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Alan Kurdi, the 3-yr-old Syrian boy who drowned while attempting to reach Greece in 2015. Till today, people continue to attempt this journey. ‘Since Alan‘s death, at least 8,500 refugees and migrants have died or gone missing‘ trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to seek shelter from war and persecution.

James Lees-Milne worked for The National Trust in its early days and travelled around, staying with aristos and trying to get them to sign over their properties.

This small book is excerpts from his super catty and gossipy diary of that period and it‘s a riot. He definitely gets bonus points from me for being great friends with the Mitford Girls (he was in love with their brother).

#GimmeShelter (in a country house, please).

(Day 8 - #GimmeShelter)

*Written in 1969, the Rolling Stones‘ song was illustrative of the uprisings around the world that saw huge protests in 1968. There was something pretty powerful going on in 1968, and it‘s worth reading about—movements in Chicago, London, Belfast, Paris and Rome; Prague, Warsaw and Helsinki; Brazil and Mexico City. Even Moscow saw a protest of eight students, who were quickly beaten and arrested.

Cinfhen Sometimes I really appreciate a political song ~ this is one of those times ❣️🙌🏻 6y

Pickpick

This was a great choice for a #BOTMchallenge reread. I fully blame @Cinfhen @Reviewsbylola and @emilyhaldi for my newfound true crime addiction!

C‘mon please Accommack County, #gimmeshelter! So many old, deserted places were burned down by Charlie and Tonya, including the Whispering Pines resort, pictured. It‘s great that no one died, but I really feel for the volunteer firefighters called out night after night during the arson spree. 4⭐️

Mdargusch I 🖤 true crime! This one had me googling and stalking on FB! 6y
emilyhaldi I‘m due for a good true crime read!!! The best! 6y

Megabooks @Reviewsbylola I know! I don‘t know which is worse, the Halloween picture or the mugshots? That is some eyeliner!!!! 6y

I think the Stones song was written about Vietnam and violence in general during that era, but the lyrics could apply to school shootings. HTBS occurs in the aftermath of a school shooting: I haven't read any other novels or nonfiction on the subject, so I'm curious to try one. Tough to even consider in a time like this when we've just had another one in the U.S., but maybe that means I should read it sooner.

Cinfhen I‘ve previously stacked this book, but don‘t remember hearing much about it. Thanks for the reminder 6y

#Gimmeshelter made me think of Huck and Jim, travelling down the river. Then it made me think the point of their journey is to get away from shelter. Then I wondered if what they knew could be called shelter. Then I thought I should re-read Huck Finn since now I'm not sure if I've ever read it. So many thoughts! 🤔
Sorry to make you read them @Cinfhen @rohit-sawant 😆

“What if you suddenly saw a two-ton great white shark barreling through the air toward your face? Such a sight defies all logic. ‘That‘s fake,‘ you mumble. Your brain shorts out. Your legs won‘t move. Without this book, the best you can hope for is to be killed in a dry pair of underwear.”

A bit of lateral thinking for #MayMovieMagic today.
#GimmeShelter is the opening track from the Rolling Stones Album ‘LET IT BLEED‘ and that is the title of the seventh book in the wonderful Rebus Series by Ian Rankin. I loved this book and gave it 5 stars.

Itchyfeetreader Wow that‘s some mental gymnastics - like your style! 6y
Andrew65 @Itchyfeetreader Thanks. If memory serves me correctly I think he said he named the book after the album. (edited) 6y
RohitSawant Great interpretation! 👏🏼👏🏼 6y
