The Kate Burkholder crime thriller series by Linda Castillo is a go to audio for me, with Burkholder as Chief of police in a small Amish town. Villette is my current classic read (which I‘m savoring slowly) while the Ruth Ware is my brain candy when I need a break from 19th c. sentence structure. 🤣 And Matsumoto will be a new-to-me author. #weeklyforecast

Day 26: Hush

A civil servant is called home from a business trip by the unexpected death of his wife from a heart attack in the street outside a cosmetics shop. But what was she doing in that area anyway?

I was somewhat bemused for 3/4 of the book, not sure how much of the leaps in the husband's thinking were reality and how much was paranoia. The last quarter had lots of twists and an abrupt ending - abrupt enough for me to wonder if I had a defective copy.

I'm not sure how to feel about this one. This is my first Japanese crime novel. It's consuming and quick to read, but the sexist viewpoints annoyed me even as I reminded myself that it was written in the 70s. However, I'm willing to read more from this author. His main character felt complex as he searched for the truth : did his wife really die of a heart attack? The criticism of America's influence was interesting along with the setting.

This is my first Japanese thriller translated by Louise Kawai. I'm not sure how to feel about it yet. What I do know is that Target is opening some stores in the US (early) to accommodate families with autistic children. & I am all for it. So it was my call for today. The author, much published in Japan, was called "a master crime writer" by the NY Times. Well, no. The mystery was fairly pedestrian and the ending was rushed and incomplete. The only part I did enjoy was the setting in modern day Japan, and the man/woman relations of that country.
