Not the tagged book, but by the same author.

Barbara Yelin spent years talking to Emmie Arbel about her life. This GN shows the whole Emmie Arbel, not just the one who survived the Holocaust. Not just a victim, because Emmie Arbel is no victim. But we see how deep trauma runs, but also that it can be overcome. We have to listen to those voices. We should never forget.

This was a moving biography, told in strong, deep pictures.

It's women in translation month, and by coincidence I had this on the shelf.Translated from the German.

Irmina travels to London in the 1930s from Germany. She wants to study and be independent, but things aren't easy.

I felt the book didn't quite hit home for me, I wasn't sure what the final third added to the story.

A look into the life of a young German woman during the rise of the Nazis. I loved the illustrations.

sblbooks I can't believe you've read 8 books already. I've only read one. 5y
megnews @sblbooks I‘ve only read one full-length novel so far this year. Pre-Litsy I never knew too much about graphic novels and memoirs. I thought it was just superheroes I wasn‘t interested in. Now every once in awhile I get on a graphic novel kick. That‘s really increased my # of books read and there are a lot of really good, interesting ones. 5y
sblbooks I went to your page and just stacked a bunch. Thanks! 5y

I‘m continuing my German comic book research. Barbara Yelin does really interesting work. The art work in Irmina is beautiful and really evokes the time period that the story takes place in. I‘m reading the version released by Self Made Hero

Thanks to this #graphicnovel, a fictional woman, Irmina von Behdinger, became real to me & I‘ve had a glimpse of what everyday life was like in Berlin during wartime. Irmina could have lived a different life if she‘d made other choices at key junctures, making this a very poignant novel. Expressive art in somber tones. #Translation from German by Michael Waaler.

-On the contrary. I admire earnestness, severity. However, it is rare to encounter. As in architecture, greatness arises through severity and clarity. That is the new way.

Irmina‘s (fictional) trip to Barbados in 1983 reminded me of an essay written by Diana Athill about travelling to Trinidad and Tobago, where she did not want to stay in a resort.

- What is it you like about all those books?
- Well, they entertain and educate. But mainly, they let me travel the world in my mind.

Lwiesman I told my kids something similar and how books take you to different places and they said but I don‘t want to go to different places!😞😩 7y
Lindy @Lwiesman I guess it‘s good that they like being where they are. You have likely switched to other persuasive tactics, like reading making you smarter, better at school work, and more likely in the future to have a good job and be healthier. 7y

Translated from German. Wow. Irmina starts out as a strong willed and independent young women. She begins a relationship with a young black man in London. She faces hardships and ends up having to go back to Germany. The rest of the book is her living in Germany during WW2. It can be hard to sympathize with her because of her changed attitudes and her responses to the horrors around her.

Book buying ban goes into effect this month and lasts until BEA. Basic rules? I have to read (3) books that I own and haven't read, before purchasing a new title (this has already fallen from 7...5... 😂). The only exceptions are author events and gifts. The local library is going to be seeing a lot of me! Let's see if I can keep this up...
