Going Into Town
Going Into Town: A Love Letter to New York | Roz Chast
39 posts | 35 read | 42 to read
From the #1 NYT bestselling author of Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant?, Roz Chast's new graphic memoir--a hilarious illustrated ode/guide/ thank-you note to Manhattan. A native Brooklynite-turned-suburban commuter deemed the quintessential New Yorker, Roz Chast has always been intensely alive to the glorious spectacle that is Manhattan--the daily clash of sidewalk racers and dawdlers; the fascinating range of dress codes; and the priceless, nutty outbursts of souls from all walks of life. For Chast, adjusting to life outside the city was surreal--(you can own trees!? you have to drive!?)--but she recognized that the reverse was true for her kids. On trips into town, they would marvel at the strange visual world of Manhattan--its blackened sidewalk gum-wads, "those West Side Story-things" (fire escapes)--and its crazily honeycombed systems and grids. Told through Chast's singularly zany, laugh-out-loud, touching, and true cartoons, Going Into Town is part New York stories (the "overheard and overseen" of the island borough), part personal and practical guide to walking, talking, renting, and venting--an irresistible, one-of-a-kind love letter to the city.

#WinterWonderland Day 11: We had a #TenthAvenueFreezeOut in NYC back in 2014. Naturally, we had to have a touristy photo taken. Tagged book is a memoir created by Chast for her daughter who was about to attend college in Manhattan after living in sprawling Suburbia for most of her life. She noted how her own parents would claim they were “going into town” even when they only lived an hour away from Manhattan. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-hQs

I borrowed this on Overdrive and spent the afternoon reading it in between waiting on others while running errands. I LOL‘d at humorous advice I‘d heard before, took note of new advice for my July trip with the kiddos, and got excited for our upcoming visit. NYC is an amazing place and the subtitle is spot on as this is a love letter to New York.

Cinfhen This looks like the type of GN I might actually want to read 😉 5y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Loved this graphic novel. Author Roz Chast explains the ways of the city to her suburban children. As a former NY'er I got a chuckle at her spot on observations.

vkois88 Looks cute! 6y
lynneamch Going to have to get this one! My 6-year-old grandson claims he remembers Brooklyn even though he was only 2 when they moved. I sure loved visiting and miss it. 6y

Got a great #libraryhaul today. So excited about the Zadie Smith, but first I need to finish up All the Birds in the Sky. So I have that and some Cadbury mini-eggs to get me through the evening! 😋

This ended much too quickly! And now all I can think about is taking a quick trip to Manhattan for even just a day or two. Granted, I didn't learn anything new, but I enjoyed her comments, ideas, and clever, funny observations. A fun quick read. #GraphicNovel

BlameJennyJane I love Roz Chast. Her book, The Joy of Being Single, got me through many a college breakup by reminding me I could both eat jellybeans AND clip my nails in my bed... with my cat on the pillow next to me! 😝 (edited) 6y

Roz Chast‘s love letter to New York is utterly charming. It‘s a quick read in comics format and it left me with a smile and the desire to travel again to Manhattan, even though I have sworn off visiting the USA under its current administration.

UrsulaMonarch I loved this one too - hopefully you can visit ASAP!! 6y

When I was a kid, my mother used to keep a crutch handy, so when the horrible upstairs neighbors, who had clearly never lived in an apartment house before, started riding their horses or whatever they were doing, she could bang on the ceiling with it. It didn‘t always work.

Suet624 😀😀😀 riding their horses... 6y
AmyG Hahaha. I would use a broom to bang on my ceiling. The old woman upstairs would move furniture in the middle of the night and I had a baby. I love Roz. 6y

Chrissyreadit I think I was the only kid on my block not allowed to sleep on the fire escape in the summer. We lived on top floor. Soooo hot. 6y
Lindy @Chrissyreadit I am sympathetic to your parents‘ point of view. Sleeping on a fire escape doesn‘t sound very safe. I am sympathetic to your point of view also, because I‘m used to a cold climate and dislike heat at night. (edited) 6y
Chrissyreadit @Lindy haha! It was very normal in the 70‘s. Now we have AC, and I live in a rural area. My teens have never known the pain. 6y
Lindy @Chrissyreadit I hope your kids appreciate it. 😄 6y

squirrelbrain @Lindy I ordered this book for my husband‘s birthday in a couple of weeks (sshh don‘t tell). It arrived today and I had to stop myself from reading it cover to cover! (and it smelt amazing too!). Thanks for the heads-up on this one. (edited) 6y

Yes! I feel like this often.

Jaimelire And the kids don‘t argue that it‘s still light out. In the summer I have that issue with them. But that being said, I can‘t wait for warmer weather! 6y
Lindy @Jaimelire The later sunset is why I‘m against daylight savings time. I wish Alberta would do like Saskatchewan and just stay on standard time all year. 6y

#firstbookof2018 While this was a lighter and quicker read than “Can‘t We Talk About Something More Pleasant?”,I enjoyed it as well. Chast gives us a tour of Manhattan, displaying her love for the city and providing practical tips.

#Decemberwrapup I had house guests for the entire month, and worked like crazy at the book store, so I went mostly for easy, dip-in-and-out-of kinda reads this month...
3 graphic memoirs, a book of poetry, a healthy cookbook, some NYC prep for a future trip, a magnificent photography book, an easy-read thriller, and a fluffy novel set around a wedding...
My two stand out novels were The Hate U Give and Call Me by Your Name... both amazing 😍💕📚

LiteraryinLawrence Great month! 6y

Somehow, I have always had it in my head that Roz Chast was a curmudgeonly kind of character, and I don't really know why. Her newest book, Going into Town, is incredibly funny and very warm. She loves New York City in all its wondrousness and weirdness, and wants to share it.

A fun, quick and informative read, mainly about Manhattan — things to do and how to get around. It‘s being passed around among my family right now and they‘re enjoying it too. Who doesn‘t love Roz Chast? That said, I‘m glad I was able to get this at a deep discount (B&N has it now at 50%, 60% for members). The $28 original price is a bit steep for something I read in one sitting, even though I know I‘ll refer to this again.

AmyG Roz is the best. 6y
Laura317 I want to take our kids there. I‘ve been only once (right after 9/11) and really loved the City. 6y

Still many more museums to check out! This book focuses on Manhattan— I‘ve also been to the Brooklyn Museum ✅.

Billypar Yes- great list! I have yet to visit the Guggenheim and a few others. The Morgan is an essential stop for any book lover. 6y
IamIamIam This is so cool!!! I loved the American Folk Art Museum! I went in once for a carousel horse exhibit! 6y
Hollie @ValerieAndBooks the Tenement Museum has recreated Tenement apartments where you can tour an Irish family‘s home, a garment worker, an Italian home, etc and learn about how this family lived. It makes it so real. 6y
LeahBergen The Morgan! 😍😍😍😍 6y
ValerieAndBooks @Billypar @LeahBergen I can‘t wait to see the Morgan!! In the past few years, we‘re now close enough to NYC that we can even make day trips. Alas, it‘s hard to find the time to go! 6y
ValerieAndBooks @IamIamIam ooh, that sounds like it was really cool. I‘ll have to keep an eye on their special exhibits! 6y
ValerieAndBooks @Hollie that sounds absolutely fascinating. And probably provides perspective on modern day life, too. 6y

As much a love letter to New York as a guide to it. I lived there briefly and have visited often, so some parts dragged a bit. Still, it made me miss New York even more.

Such a wonderful and delightful book. I enjoyed pretty much everything about it, but especially how Chast's own work mirrors the density of information she sees in Manhattan.

UrsulaMonarch It's also pleasantly light-hearted as a contrast to the brilliant & brutal 6y

A fast read, but a delightful one. I‘ve often thought about finding a book with some NYC basics in it, but didn‘t know if one existed. Now I know it does! Filled with useful information and humor, this book is on the top of my “must buy” list for my eventual first trip to Manhattan. If you love NYC or travel or Roz Chast, this book is for you.
