Death in Yellowstone
Death in Yellowstone: Accidents and Foolhardiness in the First National Park | Lee H. Whittlesey
8 posts | 7 read | 14 to read
The chilling tome that launched an entire genre of books about the often gruesome but always tragic ways people have died in our national parks, this updated edition of the classic includes calamities in Yellowstone from the past sixteen years, including the infamous grizzly bear attacks in the summer of 2011 as well as a fatal hot springs accident in 2000. In these accounts, written with sensitivity as cautionary tales about what to do and what not to do in one of our wildest national parks, Whittlesey recounts deaths ranging from tragedy to follyfrom being caught in a freak avalanche to the goring of a photographer who just got a little too close to a bison. Armchair travelers and park visitors alike will be fascinated by this important book detailing the dangers awaiting in our first national park.

Started when we were in Yellowstone. It‘s fascinating! Deaths from lack of common sense and accidents, animal accidents, and natural disasters. I really enjoyed it. I miss Yellowstone. 🌟🌟🌟🌟#rushathon

There‘s a whole chapter entitled Death from Avalanches and Freezing. #frozen #winterwonderland @TrishB @Cinfhen

Suzze Sounds really interesting! 5y
Lcsmcat @Suzze It‘s fascinating. Organized by manner of death rather than chronology it really shows how human hubris has not changed. 5y
TrishB Fascinating choice 👍🏻 5y

Cinfhen Another ode to Yellowstone 💛 5y
Aimeesue Aaah! The hot springs! I can‘t even imagine. 5y
Lcsmcat @Aimeesue We bought this when our son was 9 to try to keep him from taking risks around the thermal features. It opens with a guy swan diving in to try to rescue his dog (which he wasn‘t supposed to bring -for all kinds of reasons). Neither survived. 5y
Aimeesue @Lcsmcat Yikes! A guy fell in last year and was basically disintegrated by the time rangers got there. Scary. Particularly if you‘re a klutz like me! (edited) 5y
Lcsmcat @Aimeesue Those are the lucky ones. Often they live for hours and _don‘t lose consciousness _. That horrifies me! 5y
Aimeesue @Lcsmcat 😳😳😳 Good heavens! That‘s terrifying! 5y

We bought this to try to keep our then 10 year old son from doing something stupid, & it became the kids'
favorite campfire read. Whittlesey documents every death in the park from its beginning to publication. Some are employees, but most are #getawaysgonewrong. #sizzlinsummerbooks @Tiffy_Reads

#funfridayphoto of death! I'm sorta surprised at how few of my favorite books have animals on the cover. And of the three books that I found on my shelves all are scary. And it's sorta interesting that all of the animals will gladly eat you for dinner if given half a chance.

Zelma That is pretty funny. No fluffy bunnies or puppies on your shelf! 😂 8y
Loreen I seriously couldn't find any fluffy bunnies or puppies or kitties this morning! 😹😹😹 8y

My son is turning 13 tomorrow, and he bought this book at the Old Faithful bookstore with birthday money. I'm getting great pleasure listening to him muttering things like "what a bunch of idiots" while reading it. This picture is from the Fountain Paint Pots walkway .

Ellsbeth I have this one and plan to read it this summer too! 8y
