Good, the Bad, and the Furry: Life with the World's Most Melancholy Cat
Good, the Bad, and the Furry: Life with the World's Most Melancholy Cat | Tom Cox
12 posts | 8 read | 3 to read
Humorous and endearing, "The Good, the Bad and the Furry" is a heartwarming memoir about a man at the mercy of his unpredictable, demanding and endlessly lovable cats. Meet The Bear a cat who carries the weight of the world on his furry shoulders, and whose wise, owl-like eyes seem to ask, Can you tell me why I am a cat please? Like many intellectuals, The Bear would prefer a life of quiet solitude with plenty of time to gaze forlornly into space and contemplate society's ills. Unfortunately, he is destined to spend his days surrounded by felines of a significantly lower IQ. There is Janet, a large man cat who often accidentally sets fire to his tail by walking too close to lighted candles; Ralph, a preening tabby who enjoys meowing his own name at 5AM; and Shipley, Ralph's brother, who steals soup but is generally relaxed once you pick him up and turn him upside down. And then there's Tom Cox, writing with wit and charm about the unexpected adventures that go hand-in-hand with a life at the beck and call of four cats."

Anyone who‘s familiar with cats will relate to Tom‘s tales of his feline friends. As someone who‘s always been around cats, I could appreciate what he was describing throughout. Not really a narrative story; but a fun, lighthearted read nonetheless.

I can‘t decide which amused me most, the cats, the odd, real-life characters, or the author trying to make sense of it all, in his own way.

I was so sad when The Bear died last year, but at least he'll live on in these books. Along with Shipley, Janet, and "RAAALLLLPH!" #cats #catsoflitsy

Tom Cox is really on point about the humor and heartache of living with multiple cats. Actually, because my library ordered the second book "Close Encounters of the Furry Kind" first I read them in the wrong order. Enjoyed that one so much was first on the reserve list when I found out they were getting this one.Laugh out loud moments in both volumes.

The other cats, lol, at the end of the bed. I haven't fallen into a deep sleep in a while because of all the fighting and hissing. I have to lock the troublemaker in my room for a couple of hours until the others start scratching at the door. Good grief 🤷🏽‍♀️😸lol #catsoflitsy #petsoflitsy

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I love it when they tuck their noses. Not least of which means that theyre not fighting or knocking stuff off my dresser. 😂 7y

Mogwai wants to cuddle with the other cats at the end of the bed but she has been attacking them all day, and most of last night. The book noted is cool I think I may start reading his books❤😻📚💕

Tanner My cat used to do that with my first dog - pick fights with him and then wanting to cuddle. My dog rarely ever let him cuddle. 7y
Mimi28 @Tanner Exhausting isn't it? Lol I have the heater on in here so all of the cats want to cuddle in here on my bed. Ozzie the "water baron" is missing he is probably in my mom's room ? 7y

#RIPTheBear If you've read Tom Cox's books about his cats and his life, you know, and love, the Bear. Tom has reported that the Bear has died, at the age of 21. If you've loved an animal, you should read Cox. If you've just enjoyed life, you should read Cox.

I will miss that saucer-eyed, Smiths-loving kitty. All the love, the Bear, from me and mine.

If you love stories about cats, preferably men with too many cats, interspersed with stories of the aforementioned man's life living in the English countryside, then Tom Cox is the man for you.
