Atlas of Lost Cities
Atlas of Lost Cities: A Travel Guide to Abandoned and Forsaken Destinations | Aude de Tocqueville
6 posts | 2 read | 19 to read
Like humans, cities are mortal. They are born, they thrive, and they eventually die. In Atlas of Lost Cities, Aude de Tocqueville tells the compelling narrative of the rise and fall of such notable places as Pompeii, Teotihuacn, and Angkor. She also details the less well known places, including Centralia, an abandoned Pennsylvania town consumed by unquenchable underground fire; Nova Citas de Kilamba in Angola, where housing, schools, and stores were built for 500,000 people who never came; and Epecuen, a tourist town in Argentina that was swallowed up by water. Beautiful, original artwork shows the location of the lost cities and depicts how they looked when they thrived.

I had been planning on finishing this tonight, but apparently Trixie has other ideas. She's purring smugly to herself...

This was a big disappointment. There were no real photographs, sketches, or reprints of old maps, just artistic renderings of the continent or region of the “lost city” with vague sketches of architecture. Some of the maps were inaccurate, and while some of the stories behind the cities were interesting, the book wasn‘t engaging as a whole. Not what I hoped for at all.

All the cities in this book were just fascinating. And yet they are all gone now 🤔. #Maps #LyricalApril

#WantToReadInDec . These are the books moving up on my TBR list for Dec. I found this Atlas of Lost Cities recently and just had to get it! Somewhere in heaven my father is smiling that I inherited his good taste in books. He would've love this book 😊. #seasonsreadings2016

This book is filled with uh-mazing drawings, maps and info on the most interesting and unique places. It is the perfect gift for the holidays, crammed with fascinating tales of places forgotten. I love it to pieces, and I'm giving it to a bunch of people who don't necessarily love to read, but love to know arcane and wondrous information. Check it out. #recommendsday
