The Maine Woods
The Maine Woods | Henry David Thoreau
5 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
Posthumously published in 1864, The Maine Woods depicts Henry David Thoreaus experiences in the forests of Maine, and expands on the authors transcendental theories on the relation of humanity to Nature. On Mount Katahdin, he faces a primal, untamed Nature. Katahdin is a place not even scarred by man, but it was a specimen of what God saw fit to make this world. In Maine he comes in contact with rocks, trees, wind and solid earth as though he were witness to the creation itself. Of equal importance, The Maine Woods depicts Thoreaus contact with the American Indians and depicts his tribal education of learning the language, customs, and mores of the Penobscot people. Thoreau attempts to learn and speak the Abenaki language and becomes fascinated with its direct translation of natural phenomena as in the word sebamooka river estuary that never loses its water despite having an outlet because it also has an inlet. The Maine Woods illustrates the authors deeper understanding of the complexities of the primal wilderness of uplifted rocky summits in Maine and provides the reader with the pungent aroma of balsam firs, black spruce, mosses, and ferns as only Thoreau could. This new, redesigned edition features an insightful foreword by Thoreau scholar Richard F. Fleck.

"I would rather sit on a pumpkin, and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion." - Henry David Thoreau

Just unboxed this gorgeous candle from The Melting Library. Pumpkin Spice, coffee, and books are three of my favorite things in the world, so this candle was more than perfect ✨ It included the beautiful quote mentioned above, and..... it smells AMAZING!!

Mommamanzi @christineandbooks we are staying in Monroe at a farm but we are going all over the place. Bar Harbor, Acadia national park, and a couple other places. Anywhere you would recommend us seeing? 7y
Mommamanzi @julesG yes it is, thank you! 7y
christineandbooks From where you're staying I'd say try to get to Camden. It's a beautiful town (with some great bookstores!). Lots to see and do in and around it. Taking a trip out to Monhegan Island would be great too, but it's a ferry ride ($) and a long day and would be harder if you have little kids. It's beautiful, though. Have fun! 7y

You can't really read outside here most of the year because it's either cold or there are lots of bugs. However, autumn is the perfect season for everything. I spent a lot of time reading right here when we spent a week in Maine last September. #outside #riotgrams

I really wanted to visit this brand-spanking-new #getindie bookstore because of @Liberty 's involvement in it, and we found it on our last day in Portland! Print is not even a week old, and will have a grand opening ceremony Dec 3rd. After I picked up a copy of The Maine Woods, we went for a walk on a trail between the woods and the coast. I'm behind the camera instead of in the pic of us pausing to contemplate. We enjoyed our first time in ME!!

megt I'm already eagerly awaiting my family's annual Maine vacation so I can visit the new store! 8y
ValerieAndBooks @Liberty @tpixie @BookishMarginalia @megt it was cool to visit! I liked how it was organized. The biography section was to die for! I wish I could have bought more books on this trip but glad I got to surround myself with them on occasion! And I saw that there are lofts available above the storefront 😁. 8y
megt Oh those lofts would be dangerous for me!!! Between the bookstore and some of the restaurants in the area, I'd have no money left. 😊 8y
tpixie @ValerieAndBooks you sure had a wonderful trip !!! You saw great bookstores!! Portland ME sounds great! 8y
