Some years I need to dip into a devotional around this time of year. This edition shares poems and essays, all from people I have enjoyed reading over the years. From November 24th to January 7th I‘m taking the time to stop and check in with myself and with this book.

DivineDiana This sounds wonderful. Must plan for next year! ❤️ 2y
Suet624 @paulfrankspencer @DivineDiana I have really enjoyed it this year. Some very thoughtful pieces. 2y

We‘ve done a number of things for Advent through the years. My youngest is now 16. I was not sure what would be age appropriate and worthwhile this time around. I stumbled upon this and I think it will be just right for us. (Thank you Modern Mrs. Darcy.) It is fifty devotions from authors CS Lewis, Bonhoeffer, Martin Luther, TS Elliot, Annie Dillard, and more of the like.

SheReadsAndWrites This looks lovely. ❤️ I'm going to check it out. 🤓 2y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫I really enjoyed this Advent book! Spanning from November 24-January 7, the whole season of Advent through Epiphany is covered. Often as I was reading, I remarked on how refreshing it was to have to really use my brain to read an Advent book.
The poem “Black Rook in Rainy Weather” by Sylvia Plath was definitely a stand out entry for me, as was “The Holy Mother” by Romano Guardini.
I will definitely be reading this one again next year!

One of my favorite T.S. Eliot poems. Reading it is an annual tradition on the 11th day of Christmas.

Started this today as a sort of advent calendar, and my first impression is really good. Can't wait for tomorrow's read! (But I will, though)

I‘ve just completed this book‘s daily readings, which go from Nov. 24 to Jan. 7. While a broad array of voices are included here, I was surprised and even a little disturbed by how many of the readings I could NOT relate to. I had an easier time with the poems than the prose. To me, it seemed that the great mystery of God had been too narrowly interpreted, too confidently expressed. Perhaps next Advent, I‘ll choose readings from the mystics!

MaureenMc I‘d recommend The Reed of God by Caryll Houselander for next Advent. 😊 (edited) 5y
Louise @MaureenMc Thanks for the tip! I‘ve added it to my list! 5y

Were you forced to read 'Waiting for Godot' in High School as well? Then you will appreciate this very New Yorker-y New Yorker cartoon!

StayCurious Haha...a bit over my head but that's ok! +6 5y

To carry the spirit of the Season this year, I bought this book of daily readings for Advent. Some readings are religious, some are poems, some are questions and seekings. There are contributions from Aquinas, Luther, Dillard, Nouwen, Bonhöffer, Plath, and others. It begins on this day, the first Sunday of Advent.

EliNeedsMoreShelves I have used this book in the past - really good stuff. 5y
Louise @EliNeedsMoreShelves That‘s good to hear. I‘m heartened by the diverse list of people whose words are gathered in this book. Many perspectives on what it means to receive and carry the light in the darkness at this time of year. ✨ (edited) 5y

Loved having this be my daily reading for advent. Different types of prose (and some poetry), different focuses, but always though-provoking, encouraging, and convicting. Will be returning to this yearly.

Got a little behind on my Advent daily readings so I played some catch up today. Let's see if I can stay on track the rest of the season!

Krissajeldy Are there poetry readings daily? 8y
raelaschoenherr @Krissajeldy It's a whole variety! Some poetry and some readings/excerpts or short essays. It's a really nice mix! Never too long, but some variety in length too. 8y

There's something I love about Advent. The concept of waiting with hopeful expectation is so uplifting and refreshing this time of year and helps me focus on what's important. I heard about this book halfway through December last year, so I'm excited to have started it from the beginning this year. A daily reading related to Advent from Thanksgiving through New Year's from a varied and impressive list of authors. #currentlyreading #photoadaynov16

CoffeeAndABook Oh that sounds so good! I'll have to do what you did & have it all ready in position to read next year!!! I would appreciate a reminder of going into a more meditative spiritual state of mind before Christmas/New Year. Or actually the entire year... 😉 Thank you for sharing! 8y
Krissajeldy That sounds good! 8y
raelaschoenherr @CoffeeAndABook Yes, I always feel like Christmas season flies by and I always wish I soaked it in and reflected a little more! @krissajeldy So far, so good! 8y
