Down and Derby
Down and Derby: The Insider's Guide to Roller Derby | Alex Cohen, Jennifer Barbee
3 posts | 2 to read
When most Americans hear the words “roller derby” today, they think of the kitschy sport once popular on weekend television during the seventies and eighties. Originally an endurance competition where skaters traveled the equivalent of a trip between Los Angeles and New York, derby gradually evolved into a violent contact sport often involving fake fighting. But after nearly dying out in the nineties, derby has been making a comeback. From a mere handful of leagues in the United States just a few years ago, there are now more than 17,000 skaters in more than 400 leagues around the world, with hundreds of thousands of die-hard fans. Down and Derby will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the sport. Written by veteran skaters as both a history and a how-to, Down and Derby is a brassy celebration of every aspect of the sport, from its origins in the late 1800s, to the rules of a modern bout, to the science of picking an alias, to the many ways you can get involved off skates. Informative, entertaining, and executed with the same tough, sassy, DIY attitude — leavened with plenty of humor — that the sport is known for, Down and Derby is the first and last book on derby you’ll ever need.

The other book prize won by one of the trainees at Angel City Derby's Officials training weekend back in February. I wish I had thought to get it signed. Kasey Bomber is one of Angel City's regular announcers.

Our roller derby league had an Officials Training weekend and I was able to cull my library a little and pass some treasured books along to new trainees as prizes. Nice to pass on books and knowledge. The author of this one is Margot EM DASH Atwell and the publisher is Gutpunch Press.

I must be a glutton for punishment. I am doing 4, yes 4, reading challenges next year. And I don't double up. A different book for every category. #litsyatoz #litsybingo #popsugar and #readharder. I have them all planned, except for 6 categories in Read Harder, which really is a challenging mix this year. The last few are so specific I am struggling.

Krisjericho Oh, did I mention that I have five kids, work, and go to school full time? I'm not sure what I'm thinking. 😂 8y
rachellayown You can do it! 8y
Bloomingjen I am doing 4 as well but I am doubling up some on read harder and across challenges. I just work full time and care for 3 dogs so yeah, you are crazy! you can do it! 8y

RealLifeReading Those are four I've been eyeing too! And also the Back to the Classics challenge 8y
RealLifeReading Also did you check the links on the read harder page? There are suggestions there 8y
Leniverse I know the feeling! 🤣 I've been telling myself that my reading challenges have gotten out of hand and are taking over my life, and yet I'm planning to do just as many, if not more, challenges next year. I think I just like planning and making book lists. 🤓 8y
Krisjericho @RealLifeReading I am checking on there! I think I will be able to find some as more people contribute ideas. :) 8y
Krisjericho @Leniverse YES! I love making book lists, so I just keep doing it. 😂 8y
BrainyHeroine I'm doing the same! Not doing bingo, but between #LitsyAtoZ, Read Harder, Pop Sugar and book clubs, no doubling here! 8y
