When Crickets Cry
When Crickets Cry | Charles Martin
12 posts | 25 read | 15 to read
A man with a painful past. A child with a doubtful future. And a shared journey toward healing for both their hearts. It begins on the shaded town square in a sleepy Southern town. A spirited seven-year-old has a brisk business at her lemonade stand. But the little girls pretty yellow dress cant quite hide the ugly scar on her chest. Her latest customer, a bearded stranger, drains his cup and heads to his car, his mind on a boat he's restoring at a nearby lake. The stranger understands more about the scar than he wants to admit. And the beat-up bread truck careening around the corner with its radio blaring is about to change the trajectory of both their lives. Before it's over, they'll both know there are painful reasons why crickets cry . . . and that miracles lurk around unexpected corners.

I‘m reading this for my IRL Bookclub, #FriendsWithBooks.
It‘s a lovely work of literary fiction. I‘m enjoying it so much more than I thought I would. There are many different ways a heart needs healing.

monkeygirlsmama I really feel like I have read this, but it's not logged on my GoodReads so I'm not sure. 2w
tpixie @monkeygirlsmama I hate that when that happens. That is one good thing about Goodreads- if I remember to use it. Sometimes I see the cover of a book or read the back of the book so often that it confuses me of whether I really read it or not! Because just reading the back of the cover makes it seem familiar… 2w

I‘m going to try a new challenge this year thanks to @dabbe and @CBee
Thanks for letting me join @CBee
I‘ll start with When Crickets Cry

CBee Welcome! Glad to have you. The Scarpetta books are what got me hooked on the mystery/thriller genre - I started reading them in high school. There‘s a Scarpetta series coming with Nicole Kidman playing her 👏🏻 2w
tpixie @CBee I‘ve enjoyed the Scarpetta series. There were a few in the middle where everyone was a little too dysfunctional, but I do enjoy the mysteries. I‘m so excited to hear about the series! 2w
CBee @tpixie see, I like dysfunctional sometimes 😂😂 But I know what you mean. I‘m excited about the series too! 2w

dabbe @CBee @tpixie Kidman as Scarpetta? Count me in!!! 🤩🤗🤩 2w

tpixie @dabbe @CBee 🥳🥳🥳 (edited) 2w
DogMomIrene @CBee You are freaking me out! I loved the early Scarpetta, but stopped reading when she changed PoV in her writing. Have they gotten better again? Because I may need to pick this series up again with NK playing KS! 2w
CBee @DogMomIrene honestly I haven‘t continued the series, I read all of the earlier ones but none of the new-ish ones. BUT I will happily watch Nicole Kidman play, I don‘t know, a crazed blowfish or something - as I love her that much 😂😂😂 She could play anything or do anything and I‘d watch it ♥️ (edited) 2w
CBee @dabbe RIGHT?!? I‘m so stoked. 2w
CBee @tpixie also, Jamie Lee Curtis is in it. And I adore her. @dabbe @DogMomIrene 2w
tpixie @DogMomIrene I think they‘ve gotten better since the ones in the middle. I can‘t remember which one I read that I started enjoying again more. 2w
tpixie @CBee Jamie Lee Curtis is amazing 🤩 2w
DogMomIrene @CBee Have you seen her in The Sticky on Prime I think? It‘s about the great maple syrup heist and she‘s freaking hilarious in it! As Americans living in 🇨🇦 we appreciated her character‘s perspective. 2w
tpixie @DogMomIrene No! Sounds great! My daughter and I are looking for something else to watch. We‘ll have to look into this. 2w
DogMomIrene @tpixie Im going to do some internet sleuthing on this one then. Because I‘d love to love her books again! Thanks! 2w
tpixie @DogMomIrene I love Margo Martindale also- from The Americans 2w
CBee @DogMomIrene let me know what you find! 2w
CBee @tpixie I LOVED The Americans!! 2w
CBee @tpixie check out Black Doves on Netflix. It‘s great and Sarah Lancashire is sort of a “Margo-esque” character in it. Plus Keira Knightley! 2w
DogMomIrene @tpixie Yes! The Americans was so good. And she‘s sooooo great in The Sticky. The whole thing is just wacky fun. 2w
DogMomIrene @CBee Will do! I‘m expecting someone has a fan wiki about this series where plenty of people will weigh in with their opinion of which book revived the series. 2w
CBee @DogMomIrene oh, there has to be something like that 👏🏻👏🏻 2w
tpixie @CBee @DogMomIrene The Americans was great!! Oh a wiki page- smart idea! I also like Kathy Reichs Temperance Brennon series. Forensic Anthropology (edited) 2w
tpixie @CBee ok! I‘ll check out Black Doves! 🕊️ 2w

Well, this read was certainly a tear jerker. It definitely isn‘t the book I thought it‘d be when I picked it up. I‘ll admit, it was slow at times and I learned way more about open heart surgery and heart transplants than I‘ll ever need to know. The story may have been about the physical heart, but it was also about the heart‘s ability to love. I‘ve had this book on my TBR for so long. I‘m happy I finally took the time to read it. It was very good

Such a great book. Very emotional and just an all around great story. I loved how the story was laid out and there are some really amazing characters in here.
My 3rd 5 star rating this year. 3 out of 126 books. I don't give them out lightly. This deserved it!

I do think I'm going to set aside reading for a bit to concentrate on other tasks that need to get accomplished this month. This was a nice way to end things.

Staci Within the first couple of pages, this book made me cry! 3y
ItsAnotherJen I think I teared up at least 4 times. That ending was a roller coaster! 3y

Took me a little bit to get into, but once I was into it I couldn't set it down. Made my own heart hurt. Kept me predicting and asking questions up until the end of the book. 8.5/10

This was a heartwarming story. Sometimes you just need a good tear jerker. Annie is a little bundle of fire with strong belief and a bad heart. Reese is a man lost in the pain of loss until Annie shines a light so bright he can no longer hide in the dark.

I LOVED this book! It has some sad bits, but stick with it and it will warm your heart (pun intended, you‘ll get it when you read it).

Other than some unbelievable medical moments, this was an exceptional book

This is a heart warming story. A friend recommended me to read a Charles Martin novel. I had never heard of him so I willing to give it a try and borrowed the audio version via Overdrive. The narrator voice is so calming not sure what his name is😁. Please give this book a try. Great story!
