From the author of The Gustav Sonata The wonderful new historical novel set in seventeenth-century England from Rose Tremain, author of Restoration (shortlisted for the Booker Prize), The Road Home (winner of the Orange Prize) and Trespass (a Richard & Judy pick). Merivel has been called wonderfully entertaining (Guardian Books of the Year) and an unadulterated delight (Independent) and has been shortlisted for the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction. The gaudy years of the Restoration are long gone and Robert Merivel, physician and courtier to King Charles II, sets off for the French court in search of a fresh start. But royal life at the Palace of Versailles all glitter in front and squalor behind leaves him in despair, until a chance encounter with the seductive Madame de Flamanville, allows him to dream of a different future. But will that future ever be his? Summoned home urgently to attend to the ailing King, Merivel finds his loyalty and skill tested to their limits. Very well written, an authentic voice of the time in which it‘s set; made the reader empathise with central character despite his flaws. However, months later the thought of that carriage scene puts me right off pork pies, eurgh.

When you discover that your current read is actually a sequel... and you haven't read the first one...

drokka I stopped doubting the number of times I've done this. 7y
EvieBee I know!!! 7y
vivastory @drokka Do you stop reading and catch up with the others? 7y

Leftcoastzen 😂been there! 7y
drokka It depends. If it's something like a cozy or romance that are mostly interconnected by characters and not so much a huge series arc, likely I'll keep reading. Everything else, I stop and read the preceding book(s). I have discovered that books were part of a series after I was done, so clearly some stand well on their own. 7y

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I try to be meticulous about not letting this happen, and the one time it did I was sooooooo upset. I read 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk when I should have started with 7y
vivastory @TobeyTheScavengerMonk What makes it even worse is that the first book (Restoration) is Tremain's most well-known book 7y
LeahBergen Oops. I was going to tell you that when I mentioned reading Restoration in that other post. 😬 7y
vivastory @LeahBergen I loved Merivel. Although it refers to events that I assume are covered in Restoration I enjoyed the story and characters so much that I will definitely be checking it out 7y
