He doesnt even seem to realize shes a girl, except when he decides she needs rescuing. But Raychel doesn't want to be his girl anyway. She just needs his support as she deals with the classmate who assaulted her, the constant threat of her familys eviction, and the dream of college slipping quickly out of reach. Matt tries to help, but he doesnt really get it... and hed never understand why shes fallen into a secret relationship with his brother. The friendships are a precarious balance, and when tragedy strikes, everything falls apart. Raychel has to decide which pieces she can pick up and which ones are worth putting back together.

I actually liked the first part of this book. But part two is horrible depressing. And Matt and Raychel, the two main characters are just so unlikable. Actually, most of the characters are. Even Matt and Andrew‘s mom, who I think we were supposed to like, although I‘m not really sure. I only liked five of the characters, and three of them weren‘t in the book that much and one of them dies. So. Honestly, I don‘t know what to think about this book.

I just read page 203 and all I can think is, “What?!” Not Andrew. I am seriously upset right now.

I really struggled with this book. There didn‘t seem to be a real plot line, but in the end I guess it was about forgiveness and being true to yourself and others. There was also a very important part about consent in there which is why I gave it 2 Stars instead of 1. I‘m glad it‘s over. Now i have 5 done on my initial list. #januaryreads

Starting book 5 of the year. Book 4 of the 9 on my original January Reads list. (I ended up reading an extra Colleen Hoover novel.) I honestly don‘t remember what made me pick up After the Fall from the library. I hope it‘s good though!

Well that was fucking depressing.

I flew through this book in two days, so the tension was incredible and then... yeah. I totally agree that this book tried to do too much and the one huge thing that happened WAS NOT NECESSARY. It was already a complex, interesting story. I didn't need THAT and the ending gave no closure and now I need something relentlessly cheerful as an antidote. Suggestions, please!

elkeOriginal I love the term 'relentlessly cheerful' 👍👍 7y

Late to post, but I'm actually more than halfway through due to not being able to sleep last night and wow is this some heavy shit. I understand how people find this book to be "trying to do too much" but I'll reserve my final opinions until the end.

Oh, ye olde The Book We're Reading In School Has Eerie Relevance To The Plot! But it's rare that we see American kids reading Atwood, and it's used appropriately here as a "let me gauge how receptive you'll be to hearing about my sexual assault" conversation, and, surprise, that was maybe a good idea?

(On the next page we get the classic "but LotR is FANTASY and this is 'misguided commentary on society.'")

brownekr Since the title didn't make the picture: the book they're talking about is 7y

I cannot believe I finished this one. I almost bailed and was composing my review in my head about unlikeable characters and a book that tries to do too many things and none of them well when things got absurd. I mean the book already tries to discuss class issues, sexual assault, feminism, prejudice and other assorted complex topics along with a poorly done love triangle and that wasn't enough drama apparently.
