Bank holiday reading. The beach seemed like a bad idea. The park, on the other hand, is looking nicely empty.

I don‘t think I‘ve ever googled so much stuff related to a book I‘m reading! I often pulled up a map of the Congo region, photos of referenced explorers and flora and fauna, and the definitions for many new-to-me words, including “pettifogging,” “opprobrium,” and “cataracts” as related to river water. I clearly know far too little about Africa! This was less an adventure story and more of a history, geography, and humanity story for me. 4⭐️
Tim Butcher travels through the #DemocraticRepublicCongo (DRC). Torn by war, violence, poverty and injustice yet the Congo is mostly a country that the world seems to have forgotten about. I learned so much about politics, geography, human rights etc. Most notable is that the country is not an undeveloped country, rather an undeveloping country ⬇️

I‘m researching books for #readingafrica2022 next year and found this one for #Congo. I read King Leopold‘s Ghost last year, which was an excellent history. This will be a very different take on the region. I‘m putting it on my tbr list.
So... I‘ve decided to spend a few months reading books I own. Went through my massive piles. Starting to see a pattern 😂😂😂🤷🏽♂️Half are murder mysteries and half are about Africa. As you can see from the picture, I clearly have a plan!
