First Croatian novel I've ever read! The story centers around Dada, who returns home to care for her aging mom. When she returns, her mom is hoarding pills, her sister is not in a good place, and her father's death & younger brother's suicide several years ago still haunt her family's psyche. She goes on a personal journey to unpack her brother's last days & uncovers Croatia's gritty underbelly while exploring family, belonging, and home. 🇭🇷

New month, new book. 😁

This one is set in Croatia. I'm not sure I've ever read anything by a Croatian author or anything set there, so I'm really looking forward to it! McSweeney's publishes it and they never disappoint. It's my A for #LitsyAtoZ, which I *really* need to get a start on.

I tried so hard. I'd read another book, then go back to this and try to read a few pages, but it just stopped being worth all the effort. Unfortunately, this was just not my cup of tea.

Trying to bust out of my literary comfort zone with this Croatian author. I read the first half yesterday but am crawling through the second half today. I'm not ready to throw in the towel, but I think I'll take a day or two off and come back to this one.

T prose is so sharp. It's amazing to me that this is a translation. So few books are translated from Croatian to English anyway, but as a fluent speaker of Croatian, I'm enchanted by the way it captures the nuances of the language & the culture. Uniquely Eastern European, subversive and profound.

Excited. Bumping this up the queue.
