I'm on one heck of a cozy mystery kick. I find them so relaxing and comforting, but they are certainly not perfect. For instance, if I hear the term "murderess" in one more of these novels, I am going to explode. It is not a noun that needs to be gendered.

It isn't until I read a male author that I realize how many female authors I read. I'm only about 10% into this one, but I'm not digging how the female character is portrayed at all. She is just off. I wonder if men feel the same way when they read a novel by a woman author portraying a man.

AThousandLives87 That's a very good thought. I now wonder the same thing. 7y
Reggie Catherine Mckenzie, when parts of her stories are told from the men and especially when in regards to sex we would never say penis and vagina, there are so many words out there for those two body parts. Unless the guy is an OBGYN or urologist, we should never hear those words. And if women are writing about 14 yo boys in the wilderness from our time, they should be taking a piss, not taking a pee break. Dont get me started lol. 7y
Reggie Also two women that have written men that were believable but both ends of the spectrum, Joe from You by Katherine Kepnes and the Dr. narrating the story from A Friend of the Family by Lauren Grodstein. Those two guys I was shocked were written by women. 7y
readinginthedark @Reggie That's so interesting! I never really thought about it, but I guess I don't really hear guys I know saying penis or vagina. Most of the women I know use the word vagina but not always penis. I use both all the time since having my son; I find it's easier to be straightforward with him than trying to teach him to decipher "code words." 7y

I'm only a few minutes into this one and I'm already a bit skeptical. It's hard for me to understand someone who's complaining about not achieving literary fame at 22, especially when so many women have to struggle, working less desirable jobs for their entire lives. I'll at least give it a full hour of listening before I give up! I have hope!

So excited to finally start this on audio today! I always have trouble keeping track of characters when I start a new audiobook, this one might require me to make a chart!

Dogearedcopy I listened to this in audio as well; and thought Hilary Huber did a *fantastic* job narrating! It's funny that you would mention maybe making a chart of characters, because I suspect there is more than one character named "Jennifer!" Maybe you can tell me once you're done! ?? 7y

I feel like people have been very hard on this book because Ready Player One was just so amazing. If you don't compare it to his other work, this book is great in itself! I love how Ernest Cline writes YA for people in their 30s 😂 There is just no possible way anyone younger would get all of his references, but I adore them!

So tough to discuss this one without spoilers! I can say that the writing was well done, the story was captivating, but I wasn't always pleased with what was happening in it. I definitely had some frustrated moments where I wanted to yell and I can't help but wonder if it would have been more interesting had the murder not been disclosed in the first few pages, but I'd still recommend this if you're ok not always feeling comfortable.
