Loved this. 2021 somehow became my “Year of Jess Walter” due to his latest making the #TOB2021LongList and another friend being a big fan. I adored Beautiful Ruins (try the audio!!) and so I looked forward to The Cold Millions, and checked if the library had this. Yes! So I added to my #20BooksofSummer. This is amusing and comic at times, tragic and scary - scary in that way that life just sucks sometimes. But hopeful. Loved it

Yesterday‘s mini Book Barn #bookhaul ☺️ I‘ve read the Patchett already but couldn‘t resist this pretty cover (and only $1!!). Then I saw the tagged book and it matches, plus I loved the title. I‘m slowly buying up all these wonderful old Mary Stewarts as well. I love her books so much!

A great case study in paranoia, induced by marijuana, the Great Recession, or possibly both. Most of the plot unfolds over a string of sleepless nights, in which an unemployed regular Joe quickly finds himself in over his head and spinning out of control. I'm a sucker for stories like these, because the protagonist is basically a good guy caught up in bad circumstances, and though he has to take his lumps he ultimately finds a form of redemption.

A surprisingly good cocktail with a name that sums up this novel's theme: Root of All Evil. Pour 1 oz absinthe over ice, top with 2 oz root beer, stir, garnish with star anise. Sometimes topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. A St. George Distillery invention-they make a lovely absinthe.

Ah, what to say about this, I finished it 😐 It was ok enough to complete, but I had problems with it from the start- didn't like the cover, the narrator, the other characters, the dialogue or the plot (was there one?) every now and then there was a funny phrase that kept me going, so there's that.

This was my very first Jess Walter book and from the very beginning I knew I'd stumbled upon my new favourite author. I have to admit I first picked up this book for the title, but then the owner of the bookstore got really excited when he saw me reading the back cover and totally sold me on it.

"Yes. Standing behind my own home like this, I imagine letting go of this dream of solvency...let it go...float away into the sky...let someone else live in the big house; I'll live above the garage, finally get some sleep, spend the rest of my life as a simple servant (Matt? He's our poet-driver)."
