We Live in Water
We Live in Water: Stories | Jess Walter
22 posts | 26 read | 39 to read
We Live in Water, the first collection of short fiction from New York Times bestselling author Jess Walter, is a suite of diverse, often comic stories about personal struggle and diminished dreams, all of them marked by the wry wit and generosity of spirit that has made him one of our most talked-about writers. In "Thief," a blue-collar worker turns unlikely detective to find out which of his kids is stealing from the family vacation fund. In "We Live in Water," a lawyer returns to a corrupt North Idaho town to find the father who disappeared thirty years earlier. In "Anything Helps," a homeless man has to "go to cardboard" to raise enough money to buy his son the new Harry Potter book. In "Virgo," a local newspaper editor tries to get back at his superstitious ex-girlfriend by screwing with her horoscope. And the collection's final story transforms slyly from a portrait of Walter's hometown into a moving contemplation of our times.

My favorite delivery of the day: Auntie‘s Books in downtown Spokane! (As featured in one of the stories in Jess Walter‘s fine collection.) This is the first of two cartloads - 44 pieces total. Great selection and great people too!

dabbe 🤩🤩🤩 2mo
Hooked_on_books It‘s a great store—I‘ve been there! 2mo
DocBrown Yeah @Hooked_on_books? Visiting, passing through, or close to home? 2mo
Hooked_on_books I was there for a week teaching people how to use a new medical records system (I know, very exciting) and had a little time to check out the local haunts. This was almost 11 years ago, so it‘s been a while! 2mo

“I guess remembering is better than living.“
This was a fantastic collection filled with characters who are down & out: some living on the edges of society due to poverty & or addiction, while a few are plain unlikeable. There is a broad range here: from the lyrical title story which spans nearly 4 decades that speaks of the desire of & impossibility of transcending circumstance, to the zombie dystopian Don't Eat Cat which is very much an (cont)

vivastory addiction tale set in a ruined society, to Thief a tale of a suburban dad who suspects one of his children of stealing from the family's vacation fund & goes to an unusual length to catch the thief. Denis Johnson is a clear influence, but not in a derivative way. This is the first book I have read in the HP Olive Edition Story Collection, but I will def be reading more.

vivastory @megabooks looking through the feed just now for this book I had to lol when I saw your post about this a few years ago. 1y
Megabooks I started reading the review on the throwback post, and I was like that sounds a lot like this book (tagged)! (And I think it was.) Loved this story collection! 1y
Megabooks I really want to try Walter‘s nonfiction. Have you read this? 1y
vivastory @Megabooks This was the first Walter that I have read. I will have to def. check out that tagged book, I remember when it came out but if I did add it to my TBR list it's been lingering! 1y

This collection of short stories from Spokane, Seattle, and Portland is enticing and even comedic at times. I often wished some of the stories went on longer. Covers topics from addiction and poverty and survival and relational hurts. So while an easy read in the length and well-writtenness, it‘s heavier on the topic matter of stories.

I'm usually not a short #story reader, but love Jess Walter so am listening to this while walking. Right now appreciating The New Frontier: part hilarity, part social commentary, part cautionary tale, where a Starbuck's coffee cost $60 and the Baristas are incompetent Zombies. ("I know, you're not supposed to call them that.") Each story is touching in it's own way. Highly recommend. #TheSpineVew @Eggs

CocoReads I‘m not big on short stories either but I may need to check this out! 4y
lynneamch @CocoReads Do! I'm not big on Zombies either, but Dang! she's so good! (And only one story is about Zombies 🤯) 4y
Megabooks I like this one too! 4y

Taking me back to when I was a Litsy baby! I found these screen shots from back in 2016. Does anyone else remember what reviews looked like then? #ThowbackThursday @Cinfhen @MrBook Feel free to chime in other people!

And how can we forget my old handle! 😂😂😂

I‘m back from my outside commitment (a candidate forum), and can focus on #readathon now! Starting this book of short stories. I loved Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter.

Here‘s my stack for the #readathon and beyond. It‘s a tradition - I MUST have ten books! 🤓 This eclectic bunch should cover all my moods (including my severely impaired ability to focus at around 1:00 a.m. - that‘s when my friend, Nancy, steps in). Tomorrow is “tidy up, plan food” day. Excited to begin at 6:00 a.m. Saturday. Hope many Litsy friends are participating!

Readerann @SamHeartCoffee It was my mom‘s favorite book! I‘ve been meaning to read it for years. (edited) 6y
Readerann @Jinjer Great! I‘ll look for your updates. 6y
LauraBrook Good morning, my readathon pal! You‘ve got an awesome-lookin stack as usual. I hope you‘re hanging in there okay with your extra-early start! 6y

I couldn‘t decide what to read, so I‘m just switching books every 20 minutes. This doesn‘t seem like the most effective way to read...

ReadingEnvy I do this sometimes and usually eventually one moves to the forefront. 6y

A great opportunity for a class of northwest writers to discuss We Live in Water with its author. A great book about Spokane by one of Spokane's own! Really interesting to hear about how his own life and upbringing have made him the writer he is -- or is becoming. I need to check out more of his work!

Semi-autobiographical vignettes of life in the Inland Northwest. Some comical, some tragic, at least one with a delicious twist. Serves as a perfect companion to Campbell's Mothers, Tell Your Daughters -- this one explores the worlds of white working class men, many of them hapless or hard luck cases. In the audio version, the author makes a cameo appearance in the final story, a paean to his 'transitional' Spokane neighborhood.

Continuation of rant from same short story as previous post about this book.

mcctrish Holy smokes! I have this book in a stack and if I had realized this was waiting for me I would have picked it up already 😂 8y
Megabooks @mcctrish Most of them are not future set, but the collection is very strong! This is my second time with it in less than 6 months. 😃 8y
Megabooks @AshInBooks It's a single book of short stories. I think there are about 15 stories. 8y

Interesting thought. This is a slightly future-set short story. The story is mainly about how people who took this club drug turned into zombies 💀 who eat cats. 🙀

megt Very interesting thought! Now I want to read more! 8y
Megabooks @megt I just posted the rest of the character's rant. 💀🙀 8y
megt Thank you! I love this. How are you enjoying the rest of the collection? I'm getting the feeling I need to move this up my TBR. 8y
Megabooks @Megt this is my second time reading this collection. The longer stories are better than the shorter ones, which is good. I think I wrote a review earlier this summer. 8y
megt Good to know. I'm starting to think short stories will be better to read alongside my school work. I'll definitely be checking this one out. 8y

Looking forward to my introduction to Jess Walter at my library's Adult Story Time. Cat-eating zombies and listless baristas should make for fine lunch-time entertainment!

Such a great collection! Of course I had favorites, particularly the first two: Anything Helps & We Live In Water. Jess tugged at my heart in some of these, making my eyes sting a bit. In others, his satire made me chuckle. Easily one of the better short story collections that I've read.

LitHousewife I loved this collection! I read it in audio and it was just fantastic. I'm glad you enjoyed it. 8y
Megabooks I loved it, too! Really good collection. 8y

A short book of short stories. Only 177 pages.

I meant to read just one story but I am COMPLETELY HOOKED after the first story and now I can't seem to stop.

I brought this with me to read on this huge camping/roadtrip my family is on right now but there's no way I can wait to read by campfire. 🚐

steph_hashes_tags I'm going on a camping trip in a few weeks and starting to build my vacation TBR list, and this is looking like a good fit! 8y

4.5🌟 This collection had me from the first page. The first story remained one of my favorites. The 2-3 page stories were the weakest, but in long form, Walter really shines! The eponymous story is one of the best I've read in the past year. Don't miss these short stories!

LyndseyReads I loved Beautiful Ruins. 8y

One effing paragraph, and I'm effing hooked. I'll have to read until a story I don't like. I should know better than to pick up a book after 11 PM!

the_need_to_read He is such an amazing writer. Let me know what you think of this. 8y
youngreadrshelf I have that same problem so I like to read poetry, short stories, or essays later in the evening. 8y
LitHousewife I loved each and every one of those stories. 8y
