A Shocking Assassination
A Shocking Assassination: A Reverend Mother mystery set in 1920s' Ireland | Cora Harrison
5 posts | 2 read
Reverend Mother Aquinas is asked to prove a young mans innocence in the second of this atmospheric new Irish historical mystery series. Ireland. 1924. Reverend Mother Aquinas is buying buttered eggs in the Cork city market at the very moment when the city engineer, James Doyle, is assassinated. Although no one saw the actual killing, a young reporter named Sam OMahoney is found standing close to the body, a pistol in his hand, and is arrested and charged. Following a desperate appeal from Sams mother, convinced of her sons innocence, the Reverend Mother investigates and, in this turbulent, war-torn city, uncovers several other key suspects. Could there be a Republican connection? Was James Doyles death linked to his corrupt practices in the rebuilding of the city, burned down more than a year ago by the Black and Tans? Cork is a city divided by wealth and by politics: this murder seems to have links to both.

Rev. Mother Aquinas‘s involvement in unraveling the mystery surrounding the assassination of Cork‘s city engineer, began with buttered eggs...The plot is immersed in the both the present& in the past.Cork is a city of contradictions: vast wealth and desperate poor. Below the surface, Its people are simmering with anger about the results of the 1916 Easter uprising. The majority of its leaders were executed. A young ex-reporter is arrested. 🔽

kspenmoll 🔼 Inspector P. Cashman, Eileen, both former pupils of Rev. Mother, her cousin Lucy,& Dr. Scher all team up to solve the crime. Politics, social issues,& Yeats‘poetry all provide an integrating backdrop for the mystery. (edited) 3mo

AnnR An interesting review! 👍 I had to look up the buttered eggs reference, as I had no idea that was used as a method to preserve eggs. Learned something new today. Thank you! 3mo

Meh. Another one of these mysteries where characters tell the same story to a dozen different people. I'll grab some non-fiction if I want to read about Cork in the 1920s.

That's a highly unfortunate way to abbreviate the title... #realmature 😂

LeahBergen I immediately thought the same thing! 😂 7y
rabbitprincess @LeahBergen And then I thought "What's so shocking about it? Are they mooning somebody?" ? 7y
