Dandelion Hunter
Dandelion Hunter: Foraging the Urban Wilderness | Rebecca Lerner
10 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
In this engaging and eye-opening read, forager-journalist Becky Lerner sets out on a quest to find her inner hunter-gatherer in the city of Portland, Oregon. After a disheartening week trying to live off wild plants from the streets and parks near her home, she learns the ways of the first people who lived there and, along with a quirky cast of characters, discovers an array of useful wild plants hiding in plain sight. As she harvests them for food, medicine, and just-in-case apocalypse insurance, Lerner delves into anthropology, urban ecology and sustainability, and finds herself looking at Nature in a very different way. Humorous, philosophical, and informative, Dandelion Hunter has something for everyone, from the curious neophyte to the seasoned forager.

In our society most people think prosperity comes from money. They think that without money there is no food. But there is food without money. Wild land is not empty; weeds are wilderness, and the wilderness is a kind of wealth. And there is wilderness in the city.

batsy Every so often I'm utterly in despair that we've all come to exist on this planet, but we've made a world for ourselves in which we have to "earn" our right— with some random thing called money—to survive on it. 6y

Lindy @batsy we are a strange and wasteful species, but I find hope through reading literature. 6y

Pickpick

“There‘s a thin line between badass & dumbass.” I‘m not sure on which side of that line Lerner falls. She seems pretty flaky, as are many of the people she writes about: a survivalist; a shoplifting activist; a woman who invented her own religion & language. I was entertained by Lerner‘s adventures in urban foraging, even while I found her medicinal advice highly suspect. Still, I‘m an avid wildcrafter myself and enjoyed this overall.

There‘s a rumour that some species have acorns that are palatable raw, but their existence is disputed and even controversial. They live somewhere between the tooth fairy and honest politicians.

Plants are scientifically proven to make us feel good. […] It‘s why commercials for antidepressants are set in glowing, sunlit fields. They know we are seeking nature, so they sell us its image.

marleed Beautiful! 6y
Lindy @marleed Thanks. Certain members of my family (who plant huge fields of this crop) think this concept of canola—as an area of beauty in the city—is hilarious. 6y
ReadingEnvy Yeah it is a weird place for it but cheery just the same? 6y
Lindy @ReadingEnvy Yes, very cheery. Also, there were more than 25 people taking flower photos while I was there. 6y

Sit in front of a tree and you are looking at the incarnation of a three-hundred-million-year-old being that eats sunlight and drinks rain.

In Minneapolis, a study found that urban trees remove 384 tons of air pollution per year, a service valued at $1.9 million, and that they sequester nearly nine thousand tons of carbon annually.

Humans living today are Stone Age hunter-gatherers displaced through time to a world that differs from that for which our genetic constitution was selected. Although our genes have hardly changed, our culture has been transformed almost beyond recognition …

Severnmeadows Exciting picture (exciting stone)! 6y
Lindy @Severnmeadows Yes! It‘s at Brú na Bóinne Neolithic site in Ireland. 6y
Severnmeadows Thank you! Maybe I‘ll go one day. We took the children when they were young to Orkney & Lewis and visited the ancient sites. 6y

I saw this plate decorated with dandelions when I was at the Tokyo National Museum. The tagged book is currently in a stack on my nightstand. #dandelionlove

On accessing edible chestnuts: ‘pin them with my shoe...then drag my foot across the ground... It‘s fun, and you have the added benefit of looking ridiculous to passersby‘ 😂👌🤪
